A Unique Approach to End-of-Life Planning: Honjyuin Temple's Support Events

Addressing Modern Challenges with Compassion

Honjyuin Temple, a Tendai sect temple located in Ota Ward, Tokyo, is set to launch a series of initiatives aimed at aiding families dealing with pressing end-of-life planning challenges starting March 2026. This comes in response to the growing crises surrounding empty houses and grave management that families face as society shifts towards aging and urban concentration.

Each year, Honjyuin performs approximately 1,400 memorial services, during which many families express hardships not resolved by traditional rites—issues including the management of ancestral homes and the proper transfer of burial plots. The temple has decided to serve as a central hub for addressing these matters through its new initiative known as "One-Stop End-of-Life Support."

“Even after properly managing a grave, the issues of the family home and real estate often remain unresolved,” said the chief priest, Tomonori Miura. “Families frequently find themselves at a loss after a funeral, wondering what to do with their parent's home, as they lack clear channels for consultation.” He emphasizes that care for families should extend beyond the memorial service itself—it should encompass their ongoing needs and facilitate a sense of closure and support.

Twin Initiatives for Solving Two Problems

The temple has organized two key events that will address these overlapping needs effectively:

1. Handling Empty Houses and Inheritance Issues
On March 20, 2026, from 15:15, Honjyuin will host an event partnering with lawyers and real estate experts. This gathering will focus on inheritance topics such as title transfers and the management of vacant homes. Attendees will receive practical, clear guidance on how to navigate these complex matters.
  • - Date & Time: March 20, 2026
  • - Content: Discussions on what steps to take regarding inheritance and vacant houses, featuring direct dialogue with experts.

2. Integrated Support for Grave Closure and Relocation
On April 17, 2026, from 15:15, the temple will work with stone masonry companies to offer comprehensive assistance for the closure of graves, including the transfer of remains to Tokyo. Traditionally, families had to navigate this complex process on their own; however, this initiative will simplify the steps required, ensuring smoother transitions during what can be an emotionally taxing time.
  • - Date & Time: April 17, 2026
  • - Content: Full support for the closure of graves and the administrative steps involved in relocating remains to Tokyo, including collaboration with specialized professionals to ease the process.

Honjyuin Temple’s Vision

Honjyuin is a historic temple that recognizes the increasing detachment of people from traditional practices around death and burial, which can lead to a loss of emotional richness in life. Chief priest Tomonori Miura is dedicated to ensuring that people find comfort and happiness, regardless of sect. The temple continually seeks to address the evolving needs of society while maintaining its cultural traditions.
  • - Offering affordable options for posthumous names and the introduction of unique solutions like the "Bone Buddha"—a modern response to the challenges posed by urbanization and demographic shifts.
