Take the First Step: TOKYO Universal Walking 2026 Event

The city of Tokyo is taking a huge leap in promoting inclusivity and accessibility with the upcoming TOKYO Universal Walking 2026 event. This initiative aims to create enjoyable walking experiences for people of all ages and abilities, focusing particularly on those with disabilities. By incorporating a specially designed app, participants can engage in various walking activities on carefully constructed, barrier-free courses.

Event Overview

1. Walking Event and Wearable Device Experience Day (November 15, Sunday)

On this day, participants will join a fun-filled walking event alongside special guests. Vision-impaired individuals will have the opportunity to experience wearable devices designed to assist them while walking and will also enjoy engaging talks from invited guests. Applications for participation will open on September 1, so be sure to sign up!

2. App Walk Campaign (September 1 - ongoing)

To encourage regular walking habits, the app designed especially for individuals with disabilities allows users to walk at their leisure. Two exciting campaigns are part of this initiative:
  • - Goal Achievement Campaign: Set personal walking targets and walk in your local area.
  • - Course Completion Campaign: Choose from 15 designated courses and report your completed walks.

Understanding TOKYO Universal Walking

Barrier-Free Walking Courses

Fifteen specially designed walking courses have been created, ensuring they are accessible for everyone. Each course has been developed in consultation with individuals with disabilities and experts who verify features such as wheelchair accessibility and rest areas.

App Features Supporting Disabled Walkers

1. Audio Guidance: The app provides audio instructions at each checkpoint, making it easy for first-time walkers to navigate new routes.
2. Distance and Steps Tracking: The app will record the distance traveled and convert it into step counts, allowing wheelchair users to partake on an equal basis.

This year holds special significance as it marks the fifth anniversary of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The event is celebrated as a part of this milestone.
