Exploring New Horizons in Automated Insulin Delivery at EASD 2026

New Frontiers in Automated Insulin Delivery at EASD 2026

On October 4, 2026, the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) conference in Milan saw SiBionics unveiling an ambitious presentation titled "Seeing More, Acting Sooner." This initiative bridges continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) with a forward-thinking approach to patient care in diabetes management.

The presentation was divided into three significant sections:

1. Seeing More Than Just Glucose: This explored glucose and ketone monitoring along with combined approaches.
2. Acting Sooner – From Insight to Intervention: This section delved into multimodal sensing and insulin delivery methodologies.
3. Going Further – Realizing the Unimaginable: This focused on broader applications of biosensors in diabetes care.

To facilitate deeper discussions, SiBionics hosted a symposium on "From Sensors to Integrated Care: New Technologies Shaping the Future of Diabetes Treatment," featuring renowned experts like Professor Mark Evans from the University of Cambridge and Dr. Guido Freckmann from the Institute for Diabetes Technology in Germany.

Participants presented a range of studies, including discussions on CGM and personalized care for type 3c diabetes by Professor Karolina Kędzierská-Kapuzová. Professor Wei Qiang discussed the precision of CGM alongside future concepts in multimodal sensing, while Professor Andrej Janež highlighted continuous ketone monitoring during the GLP-1 era.

Furthermore, Professor Ahmad Haidar shared insights on ketone monitoring research and initial outcomes from the SMART02 feasibility study. This pivotal research evaluated the niia signature device, a collaborative innovation by PharmaSens and SiBionics, initiated in June 2025. The device aims to integrate continuous glucose monitoring, insulin delivery, and automatic glucose control algorithms into a single wearable patch, significantly reducing the burden of managing standalone automated insulin delivery (AID) systems.

The SMART02 study addressed a critical challenge — ensuring the accuracy of glucose measurements during insulin delivery near the sensor. Instances of temporary disruption post-bolus administration were relatively rare, primarily occurring with doses of 10 units or more, with a disruption risk of 20-25%. On average, the sensor signal fully recovered about 20 minutes after bolus administration. The prototype was also assessed in conjunction with the AGC algorithm developed by Professor Ahmad Haidar, demonstrating consistent performance throughout the study.

These findings, shared at SiBionics' booth, represent a significant milestone in the convergence of clinical needs with emergent technologies. The niia signature device is currently in research stages and remains unapproved for market availability. Further studies are necessary to confirm its performance and clinical potential;
