SIBIONICS and PharmaSens Explore New Horizons in Automated Insulin Delivery at EASD 2026

SIBIONICS and PharmaSens at EASD 2026: Transforming Diabetes Care

On October 4, 2026, at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) conference, SIBIONICS showcased its vision for the future of diabetes management with the themed presentation "See More, Act Earlier." This innovative approach combines continuous monitoring technology with cutting-edge diabetes treatment strategies, epitomizing the broader goal of improving patient outcomes.

Key Presentation Themes

At the heart of the presentation were three main segments:
1. Beyond Glucose Monitoring: This portion discussed the importance of tracking not just glucose levels but also ketones and other metabolic indicators, emphasizing a holistic view of diabetic management.
2. Insights to Intervention: Here, the focus shifted to multimodal sensing, examining how integrating different types of data can lead to better insulin delivery systems.
3. Achieving the Unimaginable: This section was dedicated to discussing the potential applications of advanced biosensors in diabetes treatment, pushing the boundaries of what is currently possible.

Industry Symposium

Further elaborating on these themes, SIBIONICS held an industry symposium titled "Shaping the Future of Diabetes Treatment with New Technologies from Sensors to Integrated Care." This event was co-chaired by renowned experts: Professor Mark Evans from the University of Cambridge and Dr. Guido Freckmann from the Institute for Diabetes Technology in Germany.

Panel Highlights:
  • - Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) and Tailored Care: Presenting on these topics was Professor Karolina Kędzierska-Kapuza, who emphasized the necessity of personalized care in Type 3c diabetes.
  • - CGM Accuracy: Professor Wei Qiang shared significant findings related to the accuracy of CGMs and future multimodal sensing concepts.
  • - Keton Monitoring in the GLP-1 Era: Professor Andrej Janež revealed pertinent research on continuous ketone monitoring.
  • - SMART02 Feasibility Study: Professor Ahmad Haidar introduced early findings regarding integrated glucose sensing and insulin delivery from the SMART02 feasibility study.

The SMART02 study evaluated an early prototype of the niia signature, a collaborative device developed by PharmaSens and SIBIONICS. This device integrates CGM, insulin delivery, and automatic glucose control (AGC) algorithms into a single wearable unit, significantly minimizing the challenges associated with managing multiple devices.

Overcoming Challenges in Integration

One of the study's key objectives was to address a substantial challenge regarding the performance of glucose measurements when insulin was administered close to the sensor. The occurrence of temporary interference post-bolus was rare but primarily happened at doses of 10 units or greater, with an occurrence rate between 20% and 25%. On average, the sensor signal returned to normal approximately 20 minutes post-administration. The prototype was additionally tested with an AGC algorithm developed by Professor Ahmad Haidar, which yielded consistent performance throughout the study.

The findings presented at SIBIONICS' booth represent a crucial milestone in the development process, underscoring both the clinical needs and the potential of these emerging technologies.

Future Prospects

The symposium and presentation not only highlighted the latest technological advances but also accentuated the importance of seamlessly integrating these innovations into clinical practice. With their niia signature device, PharmaSens and SIBIONICS are investigating how future automated insulin delivery devices can enhance wearability and user-friendliness. Further clinical studies are required to ascertain the performance and potential of this groundbreaking approach.
