Exploring Automated Insulin Delivery Innovations at EASD 2026 by SIBIONICS and PharmaSens

Innovations in Automated Insulin Delivery at EASD 2026

The European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) 2026 conference in Milan was a pivotal event where SIBIONICS presented its compelling theme, "See More, Act Sooner." This initiative intertwines continuous monitoring with future diabetes management solutions. Central to the presentation were three key themes: "Seeing More Than Glucose," focusing on glucose and ketone monitoring; "Acting Sooner from Knowledge to Intervention," which explored multimodal monitoring and insulin delivery; and "Going Further to Achieve the Unthinkable," examining broader applications of biosensors.

Additionally, an expert symposium titled "From Sensors to Integrated Care: New Technologies Shaping the Future of Diabetes Treatment" was led by Professor Mark Evans from the University of Cambridge and Dr. Guido Freckmann from the Institute for Diabetes Technology in Germany. Their discussions included various advanced topics:
  • - Professor Karolina Kędzierska-Kapuza addressed Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) and personalized care strategies for Type 3c diabetes.
  • - Professor Wei Qiang presented findings on the accuracy of CGM and concepts for future multimodal monitoring.
  • - Professor Andrej Janež engaged with the implications of continuous ketone monitoring in the era of GLP-1 medications.
  • - Meanwhile, Professor Ahmad Haidar introduced preliminary outcomes from the SMART02 feasibility study on integrated glucose sensing and insulin delivery.

The SMART02 study focused on an early prototype of the "niia signature" device, co-developed by PharmaSens and SIBIONICS since their partnership began in June 2025. This innovative device is designed to incorporate continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), insulin delivery, and an automated glucose control (AGC) algorithm into a single wearable patch. The primary aim is to ease the burden associated with the management of multiple automated insulin delivery (AID) devices.

Challenges faced during the study included maintaining accurate glucose measurement while insulin is administered near the sensor. Temporary interference events after bolus injections were relatively infrequent, occurring primarily with dosages of 10 or more units, where the probability was approximately 20 to 25%. Sensor signals generally returned to baseline approximately 20 minutes post-administration of a bolus. The second phase of the study tested the prototype alongside an AGC algorithm developed by Professor Ahmad Haidar. Throughout the study, the PharmaSens niia patch pump, SiBionics sensor, and AGC algorithm demonstrated consistent performance. These findings, presented at SIBIONICS's booth, mark a significant milestone in the early development of integrated diabetes care technology.

The exhibition and symposium effectively linked clinical requirements with emerging technologies. Through the development of the niia signature device, SIBIONICS and PharmaSens are investigating how integration can enhance the usability and comfort of future AID devices. Further research is imperative to determine its effectiveness and clinical potential.
