Advancements in Automated Insulin Delivery by SIBIONICS and PharmaSens at EASD 2026
At the recent European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) 2026 conference held in Milan, Italy, SIBIONICS unveiled its transformative concept titled "See More, Act Earlier". This initiative merges continuous sensing technology with the future landscape of diabetes management. The presentation was divided into three pivotal chapters: "See More Beyond Glucose", which encompasses monitoring glucose, ketones, and their combined analysis; "Act Earlier From Insight to Intervention", focusing on multimodal sensing approaches and insulin delivery methods; and finally, "Go Further Realizing the Unimagined", which envisions further advancements in biosensing applications.
The discussion surrounding these advancements continued at the industry symposium led by notable figures such as Prof. Mark Evans from the University of Cambridge and Dr. Guido Freckmann from the Institute for Diabetes-Technology GmbH in Germany. Various experts shared their insights, including Prof. Karolina Kędzierska-Kapuza, who spoke about the importance of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in tailored care for patients with type 3c diabetes. Meanwhile, Prof. Wei Qiang provided findings on CGM accuracy and potential future developments in multimodal sensing technologies.
Another significant highlight came from Prof. Andrej Janež, who discussed the integration of continuous ketone monitoring within the emerging GLP-1 treatment era. Completing the symposium, Prof. Ahmad Haidar presented research on ketone monitoring and early results from the SMART02 feasibility study, which investigates the use of an integrated system for glucose sensing and insulin administration.
The SMART02 study evaluated the niia signature device, a promising investigational solution created through a collaboration between SIBIONICS and PharmaSens since their partnership was announced in June 2025. The niia signature intends to provide a holistic diabetes management approach by combining CGM, insulin delivery, and an automated glucose control (AGC) algorithm into a single, user-friendly wearable patch. This evolution aims to significantly ease the burden placed on individuals requiring multiple devices for insulin administration.
Key findings from the study included challenges related to the integration of glucose measurement accuracy while administering insulin close to the sensor. Notably, temporary interference was observed exclusively after higher bolus doses but was resolved within approximately 20 minutes post-administration. The prototype demonstrated a field-tested synergy between the PharmaSens niia patch pump, the SiBionics sensor, and the bespoke AGC algorithm designed by Prof. Ahmad Haidar, illustrating consistent performance throughout the study.
The exhibition and symposium effectively aligned clinical necessities with cutting-edge technologies in diabetes care. The niia signature device represents a forward-thinking attempt by PharmaSens and SIBIONICS to innovate and streamline the future of automated insulin delivery, though further research is required to assess its efficacy and potential clinical applications.
It is important to note that niia signature remains an investigational device. It is not currently approved for sale in any market and should be regarded as a breakthrough in the development phase.
