Gymkhana Returns: Travis Pastrana Takes the Wheel of the Subaru Brataroo 9500 Turbo

The Thrilling Return of Gymkhana

The Gymkhana film franchise, known for pushing the limits of automotive performance and creativity, has made a spectacular return. Hoonigan and Subaru Motorsports USA have unveiled the latest addition to this iconic series: the Subaru Brataroo 9500 Turbo, led by the thrilling prowess of Travis Pastrana.

The Brataroo takes center stage at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, showcasing an exciting blend of vintage Subaru roots and cutting-edge technology. Inspired by the classic 1978 Subaru BRAT, the Brataroo is engineered to defy conventions, making it the wildest Gymkhana car ever produced. This new vehicle can rev beyond 9,500 RPM, thanks to its turbocharged 2.0-liter boxer engine, producing a jaw-dropping 670 horsepower and 680 lb-ft of torque.

A Journey Down Under

Set against the stunning Australian backdrop, the latest installment of Gymkhana will feature Pastrana navigating famous landmarks and engaging thrilling stunts that have become synonymous with the series. This iteration marks Pastrana’s third custom-built Subaru for Gymkhana, promising an electrifying combination of wild stunts, high-speed maneuvers, and notable cameos.

The character of the Brataroo is defined by its exceptional engineering, combining the notorious spirit of the BRAT with contemporary performance capabilities. The lightweight body is crafted entirely from carbon fiber, enhancing agility while adhering to the rigorous safety standards of the World Rally Championship (WRC).

Revolutionary Design and Features

Khyzyl Saleem, a respected designer, reimagined the BRAT’s iconic aesthetics, creating a radical widebody that harmonizes motorsports and retro charm. The vehicle showcases a contemporary take on the 70s Subaru design, complete with graphics inspired by Outback sunsets.

Further enhancing performance, the Brataroo boasts advanced active aerodynamics. Its unique front fender louvers adjust in real-time, optimizing balance during jumps or sharp turns. At the rear, it houses two adjustable wings that can be swapped out based on the driving conditions, providing crucial aerodynamic stability whether airborne or grounded.

Inside the Brataroo

Stepping inside the Brataroo, one discovers a cockpit that beautifully merges nostalgia and innovation. The interior pays homage to the original BRAT features while integrating modern tech. A carbon-fiber dashboard and contemporary controls sit alongside classic elements like a restored OEM radio, making for a rich driving experience.

“This BRAT is completely unhinged - in the best way possible,” Pastrana states. His enthusiasm underscores the car's unique character, combining nostalgic elements of Subaru’s legacy with the technological advancements needed for groundbreaking stunts.

Preparing for a New Era

The debut of the Subaru Brataroo 9500 Turbo kicks off what is dubbed “Gymkhana Season.” This launch not only honors the legacy left by the franchise’s creator, Ken Block, but also aims to attract a new audience while satisfying long-time fans. The upcoming Gymkhana film, titled "Aussie Shred," will premiere on the Hoonigan YouTube channel in early December, continuing the franchise’s tradition of captivating automotive storytelling.

As Hoonigan celebrates its culture of automotive excitement, the return of Gymkhana reminds us what makes motorsport captivating: passion, creativity, and an unyielding drive to push boundaries. The Brataroo symbolizes a thrilling new chapter in this legendary series, inviting viewers to buckle up for an unforgettable ride.
