Harajuku Urban Farm: The Last Harvest Festival
The Harajuku Urban Farm, a unique urban co-creation project utilizing national land in the heart of Tokyo, is set to host its final major event, the Harvest Festival, on November 23, 2025. This event will take place just two months before the farm closes its doors. Drawing inspiration from the ancient Japanese tradition of `Niinamesai`, it’s a day to express appreciation for the earth and harvest.
Celebrating Gratitude and Sustainability
The Harvest Festival aims to foster a deeper understanding of sustainable living and the vital connections between nature and humanity. Attendees will have the chance to enjoy freshly harvested vegetables distributed for free, participate in mini-workshops and discussions on composting, and embark on exciting activities like herb cruises and wildlife observation.
For the past seven months, the farm has served as a vibrant green space where locals and visitors alike have been able to engage in hands-on farming experiences. The farm has successfully turned food waste, weeds, and crop residues into nutrient-rich compost, which in turn has nourished a variety of produce. Visitors have marveled at the fresh tomatoes, delighted in the scent of basil, and enjoyed connecting with one another through these shared experiences.
Activities Planned for the Festival
The schedule is packed with engaging workshops and activities, catering to attendees of all ages:
- - Herb Picking and Tea Making: Experience the joy of harvesting and learn how to turn herbs into delightful teas.
- - Herb Cruise: Guided tours of herb patches will take place at 11:00, 13:00, and 14:00, providing insights into the farm's flora.

A Vision for Sustainable Living
The Harajuku Urban Farm project began in February 2025, addressing several urban challenges, including waste production and social disconnection. Utilizing 1,500 square meters of previously underused national land, the initiative aims to transform food waste into compost and create a sustainable cycle within the community. Over 40 participants from the community composting initiative have been actively involved, generating ideas and sharing knowledge to foster a connected community.
The rich experience of farming, learning, and gratitude comes together at the Harvest Festival, providing an excellent opportunity for attendees to reflect on sustainable living and the gifts of nature. The underlying mission remains clear: to contribute to a healthy planet.
