Okayama University Represents Japan at UN High-Level Symposium

On July 13, 2026, Okayama University participated in the second installment of the Global Higher Education Symposium held at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The event brought together prominent leaders from various sectors to discuss pivotal issues regarding higher education's role in building sustainable futures.

The symposium, hosted by multiple UN organizations including the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), featured esteemed participants such as Atsufumi Yokoi, the Vice President for Global Engagement at Okayama University. As a UNESCO chairholder, he contributed significantly to the discussions.

Key Highlights from the Symposium

This year's symposium built upon the discussions from the first symposium held in 2025, where participants outlined a roadmap for future higher education. The culmination of these discussions led to the unveiling of the Global Higher Education Consensus Statement, which emphasizes the importance of collaborative efforts among educational institutions, UN member states, and international organizations.

The main theme, "Building Sustainable Futures: The Role of Higher Education," guided three panel discussions focused on how higher education can actively contribute to developing equitable, inclusive, and sustainable societies.

During the panels, Vice President Yokoi notably addressed the need for higher education institutions to foster what he termed Relational Agency—the ability of individuals to act with intention and connection, both with each other and with the planet. He stressed that universities must operate as ecological institutions, integrating education, research, and policy to steer transformative changes towards sustainability.

Diplomatic Engagement with UN Representatives

On the same day, Vice President Yokoi also visited the Japanese Mission to the United Nations. He met with Tomohiro Mikana, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Japan, where they exchanged views on the future of higher education post-2030, discussing the expected contributions of Japanese institutions to global education and research.
