If you are looking for an exhilarating way to spend your summer vacation, look no further than the Shimanami Cycling Challenge. Organized by Plus One Education, a subsidiary of RISO Education Group, this exciting event will take place from September 19th to September 21st, 2026. This is not just a regular cycling tour; it is a challenging expedition designed specifically for students in elementary and junior high school, making it an unforgettable experience for young adventurers.

Overview of the Shimanami Cycling Challenge

The Shimanami Cycling Challenge is a planned group travel experience, catering to children aged from 6 to 15 years old, which aligns with their school grade as of the tour date. Participants will begin their journey in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture, and wrap it up in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The tour spans two nights and three days, with essential transportation included via Shinkansen and special express trains from Tokyo. Accommodation varies from traditional Japanese rooms at Hotel Imabari Kikusui to Western-style lodgings at Juicy Fruits, ensuring a comfortable stay.

Schedule and Highlights

  • - Day 1: Departure from Tokyo in the morning, with a scenic train ride to Imabari. Participants will have the afternoon to explore the local area and settle in.
  • - Day 2: Early morning starts with cycling as participants gear up to pedal across the stunning Shimanami Kaido, a route famous for its beautiful vistas and various islands.
  • - Day 3: The final leg of the challenge continues from Ikuchi Island to the goal in Onomichi, where participants will experience the satisfaction of completing approximately 70km of cycling.

The tour includes five meals (two breakfasts, three lunches, and two dinners) and all necessary gear to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride. Additionally, a minimum of 8 participants is required for the tour to proceed.

Why Choose the Shimanami Cycling Challenge?

1. A Unique Cycling Experience

This cycling challenge is specifically designed for children who can ride a bike confidently. The participation of professional cycling guides and support staff means that all riders can tackle the route safely, even if it's their first time on a long-distance journey.

2. Perfect Timing

Taking place during the Silver Week, when the weather is pleasantly cooler, this challenge not only promotes physical activity but also encourages camaraderie among participants. Every rider has a common goal: to successfully complete the route while enjoying the journey with teammates.

3. Local Delicacies as Rewards

One of the highlights of the Shimanami Cycling Challenge is the chance to enjoy local cuisine at roadside stations along the route. The prospect of a delicious lunch serves as a fantastic motivator for children as they cycle together towards their goal.

This year, registration is open and it's expected that spots will fill up quickly, so interested parties are encouraged to apply through the official site soon.
