Enhancing Cattle Traceability in Pará: JBS Steps Up
In a major initiative aimed at improving cattle traceability in Pará, Brazil,
JBS, one of the world's largest food companies, has announced a contribution of 3 million livestock tags. This donation is part of a broader program designed to support small farmers and enhance the stewardship of the cattle supply chain in the region, which is known for having the second-largest cattle herd in Brazil.
This significant announcement was made at a discussion panel titled "From Davos to Belém: Defining Brazil's Path to a Sustainable, Low-Carbon Cattle Industry" during the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum held in Davos. The initiative is a collaborative effort encompassing government, manufacturers, civil society, and prominent corporations. According to
Gilberto Tomazoni, CEO of JBS Global, the goal is to become change agents throughout the supply chain.
The Details of the Donation
Out of the 3 million tags, 2 million are designated for smallholder farmers, which will fulfill half of the projected demand in the state for 2025. This initiative receives support from
The Nature Conservancy (TNC), which is providing 2 million tags funded by the
Bezos Earth Fund. The fund committed to assisting the state with the implementation of the program during
COP28. The remaining tags are being supplied by JBS itself.
In 2024, a pilot program was conducted by JBS across its facilities in
Marabá and
Redenção, where they tagged 28,000 cattle. This pilot aimed to test the technology and ensure compliance with requirements set forth by the working group overseeing cattle transportation. Insights gained from this pilot will be shared with coalition partners to support large-scale implementation of the tagging program.
The Broader Impact
The initiatives undertaken by JBS are revolutionary for the cattle farming sector in Brazil and aim to trace every single animal by the end of 2026. This enhanced traceability will have far-reaching benefits, including improved animal welfare, better environmental stewardship, and increased market confidence.
As part of its commitment to corporate social responsibility, JBS is working diligently to ensure that these tags aid in establishing a transparent supply chain that prioritizes sustainability while supporting local farmer communities.

In conclusion, JBS's ambitious commitment to donating 3 million tags underscores a critical step towards transforming the cattle industry in Pará, facilitating both traceability and sustainability, setting an example for responsible practices in the agricultural and livestock sectors.
