REGENXBIO Appoints Greg Ciongoli to its Board of Directors
REGENXBIO Inc., listed on the Nasdaq under the symbol RGNX, has made an important announcement regarding the expansion of its Board of Directors. Effective August 25, 2026, Greg Ciongoli will be joining the Board, a move that is expected to bolster the company as it gears up for significant advancements in its portfolio of innovative gene therapies.
Mr. Ciongoli's arrival comes at a pivotal time for REGENXBIO. With a robust late-stage pipeline featuring potential first-and-best-in-class gene therapies, the company is focusing on its evolution into a global commercial entity. His extensive background in biotechnology investing and corporate strategy is aligned with REGENXBIO’s commitment to enhancing shareholder value and delivering transformative treatments to patients.
In tandem with this appointment, REGENXBIO announces the retirement of two independent directors, Jerry Karabelas and Jean Bennett, both of whom have made invaluable contributions to the company. Karabelas, who has served since 2015, and Bennett, who joined in 2021, have played notable roles in steering the company through critical growth phases. REGENXBIO expressed deep gratitude for their service and the significant impact they've had on shaping the company’s trajectory.
Curran Simpson, President and CEO of REGENXBIO, highlighted the importance of strategic succession planning during this transition. He remarked, “As we enter our next growth phase, it’s essential that our Board reflects the diverse expertise necessary for fostering innovation and capitalizing on market opportunities.” Mr. Ciongoli's financial acumen is expected to complement the Board’s existing capabilities, which encompass scientific, clinical, and commercial expertise.
Ciongoli, who is the Managing Partner of Adiumentum Capital Management, brings over 16 years of experience from The Baupost Group, where he held a leading position in public group investing. His professional journey has been heavily weighted towards healthcare investments, demonstrating his ability to navigate complex markets and contribute to corporate governance and transformation initiatives.
His existing roles include Board Chairman at Atara Biotherapeutics and Board member at Zymeworks Inc., adding to his extensive governance experience across multiple biopharmaceutical firms. With an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BA from Princeton University, Mr. Ciongoli’s academic credentials further reinforce his qualifications for this role.
REGENXBIO was founded in 2009 and has made remarkable strides in the gene therapy sector, specifically focused on adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapy. The company is advancing its late-stage pipeline, which includes a range of therapies aimed at addressing rare diseases. Among these treatments are RGX-202 for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, suragene lomparvovec for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in partnership with AbbVie, and RGX-121, which targets MPS II in collaboration with Nippon Shinyaku.
With thousands of patients already treated through its AAV platform, including those benefiting from Novartis’ ZOLGENSMA®, REGENXBIO is poised for a transformation in how healthcare is delivered. The company's investigational therapies promise to significantly influence treatment landscapes for numerous debilitating conditions.
As REGENXBIO progresses into this critical phase with Mr. Ciongoli's addition, the biotech firm remains focused on its mission to improve lives through the transformative potential of gene therapy and to fortify its position as a leader in the field. The collaborative efforts of the newly structured Board aim to not only innovate but also ensure that shareholders can expect long-term value and success from the company’s endeavors.
