Understanding the Connection Between Beauty and Bone Health for Women in Menopause

On the occasion of World Menopause Day, which takes place on October 18, Meiji Co., Ltd. and MYLILY conducted a survey targeting women aged 40-59 across Japan to explore their awareness regarding beauty and bone health. The results were revealing and highlighted a noteworthy discrepancy between concerns related to skin changes versus bone health.

Key Findings of the Survey

Out of the 300 general female participants, 41.7% expressed concern about skin-related changes, such as dryness and wrinkles, while only 12% showed similar concern regarding bone health. This stark contrast indicates a lower awareness level regarding bone health among women undergoing menopause.

Furthermore, when asked about their knowledge of collagen — a vital component in both skin and bones — only 46.7% associated it with bone structure. The survey indicated that over half of the respondents were unaware that collagen exists in bone tissue, underlining a significant gap in understanding the role of nutrition in maintaining bone health.

In a subset of the survey targeting 127 users of MYLILY's menopause-focused online medical consultation service, it was found that while 22.8% were concerned about their bone health, only 6.3% felt they were sufficiently taking steps to care for it. This highlights that even among women who are directly engaging with menopause care, awareness and actionable steps towards bone health remain alarmingly low.

Importance of Awareness

As women transition into menopause, the body undergoes various changes, including a significant decrease in bone density, especially during the years surrounding menopause. However, unlike visible changes, the decline in bone health is often unnoticed, making proactive monitoring and care essential.

Collagen is critical for maintaining the structure of the skin, hair, and bones. Despite the awareness and practices revolving around skin care, it seems that bone health lags considerably behind. The survey results emphasize the need for educational initiatives that merge awareness of beauty practices with the importance of bone health.

Behavioral Insights

According to the findings, common daily beauty routines were well-established among these women, with 84% practicing skincare and 62.3% employing ultraviolet protection measures. When it came to treatments for hair, 51.7% reported routines in place, yet only 10% mentioned incorporating nutrition for bone health into their daily habits.

Interestingly, 66.3% of participants showed interest in integrating calcium and other nutrients for bone health alongside their existing beauty routines. This suggests that there’s a potential bridge to directly link established beauty practices with bone care, thereby enhancing the overall health profile of menopausal women.

Future Perspectives

The collaboration between Meiji and MYLILY aims to inform women about the critical connection between beauty and bone health, particularly during menopause — a transition period that necessitates a re-evaluation of health priorities. There’s a strong need to transform this knowledge into actionable health measures, creating a comprehensive support system for menopause management.

With continued education and proper care strategies, it is crucial that women begin to acknowledge their bone health as part of their beauty regimen. Through outreach and collaboration, both companies aspire to create a more informed generation of menopausal women who are empowered to take charge of their health and well-being effectively.

In conclusion, as society acknowledges the significance of physical aesthetics, it must also recognize and address the silent yet critical challenges posed by bone health, particularly for women navigating the complexities of menopause. By bridging the gap between beauty and bone health awareness, we build a stronger foundation for women's health in the years to come.
