Merrell and Big Brothers Big Sisters Collaborate for Inclusivity
In an exciting development for adventure enthusiasts and advocates of mentorship, Merrell®, the premier brand in hiking and outdoor footwear, has unveiled a unique collaboration with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA). This partnership is designed to create paths for inclusive outdoor experiences for young individuals, harnessing the transformative power of mentorship and the beauty of nature.
A Unique Collaboration
The highlight of this partnership is the exclusive design of Merrell’s modern Moab Speed 2 hiking shoe. Collaboratively created with input from Big Brothers Big Sisters, the design reflects the vibrant energy and spirit of mentorship. One of Merrell's own team members, who also volunteers as a mentor with BBBS, infused the shoe's design with colors and themes symbolizing the organization. The shoe showcases a lively green and black palette adorned with the phrase “Big Brothers Big Sisters” prominently displayed on the heel.
Pallav Tamaskar, Chief Marketing Officer of Merrell, expressed the brand's dedication to empowering youth through mentorship, stating, "Mentorship is crucial for empowering and building the confidence of young people, and our collaboration showcases its profound influence." This initiative not only aims to create a fashionable product but also to foster relationships between 'Bigs' (mentors) and 'Littles' (mentees) during shared outdoor experiences.
The Role of Outdoor Experiences in Mentorship
Research indicates that time spent in nature has significant mental and emotional benefits. Ninety percent of 'Littles' participating in the BBBS program reported feeling healthier and happier when connected to nature. Furthermore, 79% experienced a boost in self-confidence after such outdoor engagements. Adam Vasallo, Chief Marketing Officer of BBBSA, remarked on the impactful nature of this partnership by stating, "This collaboration reinforces the power that mentorship has to unify and inspire us to make a difference in the lives of young people."
The limited-edition Moab Speed 2 shoes retail for $140 and are available for purchase exclusively on Merrell's website. Merrell’s innovative shoes are designed not only for aesthetics but also for performance, making them perfect for diverse outdoor activities.
Merrell’s Commitment to Mentorship
Merrell’s collaboration with BBBSA extends beyond just shoe design. Over the past four years, the brands have worked together to increase awareness about the importance of mentorship. In 2023, they launched a public service announcement to spark interest among potential mentors, countering misconceptions about the time and commitment required to be a mentor. The campaign, known as “It Takes Little to Be Big,” aims to demonstrate that every small act of mentorship can have a profound impact on a young person's life.
Merrell is further supporting this initiative by donating $10 from each shoe sale to BBBS, ensuring that more youth have access to mentorship opportunities and outdoor experiences.
A Vision for Future Generations
Merrell’s overarching vision is to create a world where everyone can enjoy the wonders of the outdoors. They prioritize inclusivity and sustainability, striving to foster an environment in which future generations can thrive. The brand has gained accolades for promoting a more diverse vision of outdoor participation, recently being named Footwear News' 2022 Brand of the Year.
Big Brothers Big Sisters has also been making strides in mentoring youth since its inception in 1904. The organization is dedicated to creating supportive, trusting relationships that enable young people to reach their potential. With a vast network of over 230 local agencies, BBBSA serves more than 5,000 communities across all 50 states.
This partnership between Merrell and Big Brothers Big Sisters signifies a joint effort to inspire a love for the outdoors while empowering the next generation through mentorship. By uniting their efforts, they aim to ensure that every child has the opportunity to explore, grow, and succeed in life.
