GEODIS and Prologis: Launching Sustainable Solar Initiative in Mexico
In a groundbreaking collaboration aimed at promoting sustainability in logistics,
GEODIS has partnered with
Prologis to unveil a significant rooftop solar installation at Prologis Park Grande, located in Tepotzotlán, Mexico. This ambitious project features a
619-kilowatt (kWDC) solar system that is expected to produce about
892 megawatt-hours of clean energy annually, marking a vital step in GEODIS's global commitment to enhancing sustainable logistics
Commitment to Sustainability
At a recent ceremony celebrating this solar initiative, Jessica Himmelreich, Vice President of Sustainability, Occupational Safety and Health at GEODIS, emphasized the importance of this installation. "This solar installation goes beyond mere technological improvement; it symbolizes our ongoing pledge to innovation, accountability, and sustainability," she stated. The system aims to cut down on GEODIS's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while ensuring a reliable source of renewable energy.
The rooftop solar project is strategically located within one of Mexico’s key industrial areas, designed to bolster GEODIS’s efforts in minimizing GHG emissions, increasing the use of low-carbon energy, and enhancing energy resilience onsite. This initiative is part of GEODIS’s broader climate goals—validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)—which include a
42% reduction in GHG emissions from their fleets and buildings and a
25% reduction in the carbon intensity of subcontracted transport compared to 2022.
A Strategic Alignment for the Future
The collaboration between GEODIS and Prologis is not a one-off project but serves as a foundation for a long-term partnership. Both entities aim at achieving sustainability goals that include transitioning to environmentally certified warehouses, enhancing energy efficiency across their supply chain, and providing more sustainable logistics solutions to customers. Prologis, which seeks to install
1 gigawatt (GW) of solar capacity globally by 2025, views this installation as an important step toward meeting their renewable energy targets.
"Reliable, low-carbon energy is a fundamental requirement for our customers," said John Hoekstra, Head of Enterprise Sustainability for Prologis. By joining forces, GEODIS and Prologis are not only supporting sustainable operations in Mexico but are also positioning themselves as leaders in the global shift toward green logistics.
Impact on the Broader Market
Given the increasing concerns over electricity costs and supply reliability, this new installation aims to stabilize energy expenses and lessen vulnerabilities to fluctuating utility rates. The system has been designed for scalability, with potential for battery storage and microgrid applications in the future.
As a leader in logistics who serves a diverse client base across sectors such as retail, technology, pharmaceuticals, and automotive, GEODIS is committed to providing transparent and actionable solutions that promote environmental responsibility.
"This solar project serves as a concrete demonstration of our dedication to sustainability, innovation, and leadership within the logistics field," Himmelreich concluded.
Conclusion
The installation of this solar project represents a pivotal moment not just for GEODIS and Prologis, but also for the logistics industry as a whole. As companies strive to reduce their environmental footprints, collaborations like this pave the way for a more sustainable future in logistics, reflecting a collective commitment to clean energy practices.
