Understanding Shibuya's Livability: Insights From Local Residents

Shibuya's Livability: Survey Insights

Shibuya, located in the heart of Tokyo, is renowned for its bustling atmosphere and excellent transport links. A recent survey conducted by MEMOCO in collaboration with Sumanara explored the livability of this vibrant district through the feedback of 109 residents. The results span various aspects such as transportation convenience, safety, disaster preparedness, and more.

Survey Background

The comprehensive survey entitled "Livability in Shibuya" was conducted from January 29, 2025, to December 30, 2025. It included 109 respondents, with the gender distribution showing a majority of female participants (68%) compared to men (32%). The age demographics were also diverse, with the largest age group being individuals in their 30s (36%) followed by those in their 20s (22%) and 40s (22%).

Transportation Satisfaction

An impressive 98% of residents expressed satisfaction with the transportation options available in Shibuya. The area is served by numerous lines, including JR and private railways, making commuting a breeze. Residents frequently mention the accessibility, with many highlighting comments like "Everything is convenient to reach" and "I can walk home if I miss the last train."

However, some residents pointed out the stress induced by overcrowding during peak hours. Nevertheless, the variety of transport methods available ensures that Shibuya remains a desirable place to live.

Ease of Living

About 94% of respondents reported satisfaction with the ease of living in the district. Shibuya offers a wealth of shopping options, from supermarkets to specialty shops, allowing for convenient everyday purchases. Residents appreciate the range of amenities available within close proximity, with comments praising the selection of stores nearby.

Yet, concerns have been raised about the limited availability of large supermarkets and discount stores, prompting calls for improvements in specific neighborhoods.

Cost of Living

Contrastingly, only 43% of respondents felt positively about the cost of living, with a significant 58% expressing dissatisfaction. The high cost of living in one of Tokyo's prime locations presents challenges, with many noting the steep prices at local shops as a disadvantage.

Comments reflect the concerns over expenses—such as high rent and elevated grocery prices—with some residents suggesting that while prices are high, the convenience offered offsets this burden, illustrating a divide between perceptions based on individual priorities.

Commercial and Recreational Facilities

In terms of commercial facilities and entertainment, approximately 90% of residents were satisfied. Shibuya's dynamic environment features an array of shopping centers, restaurants, cinemas, and leisure options, fulfilling diverse tastes and preferences. Many respondents highlighted the constant emergence of new establishments in the area, affirming that there is always something to explore.

However, the heavy foot traffic is a downside for some, with overcrowding and noise being flagged as contributors to stress.

Safety and Security

Roughly 65% of respondents expressed contentment with local safety levels, although a sizeable 34% voiced their concerns. While residential areas like Ebisu and Daikanyama are regarded as safe, the bustling nightlife around Shibuya station can sometimes raise safety apprehensions, especially during late hours. Residents have reported issues related to increased crime rates and rowdy behavior in entertainment districts.

Disaster Preparedness

Approximately 76% felt assured regarding disaster safety measures in place. Many noted that Shibuya has made significant advancements in disaster preparedness, with accessible hazard maps highlighting risk areas. However, due to the district's topography, concerns regarding water damage during heavy rain persist, prompting some residents to be cautious about living within certain low-lying areas.

Overall Livability Assessment

In total, 95% of residents rated their overall satisfaction positively, indicating a strong appeal for living in Shibuya. While issues such as cost of living and safety continue to challenge perceptions, the favorable transportation and extensive amenities stand out as key factors enhancing livability.

Conclusion

Shibuya's livability survey results illustrate that while residents cherish the ease of getting around and the array of amenities, they also face the challenges of high living costs and varying safety levels. The district is well suited for those prioritizing accessibility and commercial variety in their living environment. Future residents should weigh these factors carefully against their personal priorities, particularly regarding budget and lifestyle when considering Shibuya as a place to call home.
