Understanding Hikikomori: A Nationwide Caravan for Connection and Awareness in Japan
Starting on August 23, 2023, the "Hikikomori Voice Station Nationwide Caravan" organized by the PAL System Federation will embark on a mission to foster understanding and connection surrounding the phenomenon of hikikomori across six cities in Japan, including Kanagawa. With an estimated 1.46 million individuals in Japan experiencing hikikomori, this caravan aims to address the many misconceptions and biases that surround this social issue.
A Caravan for Understanding
The caravan will take place from August 23 through November 8, spanning different venues in Kanagawa, Kochi, Akita, Niigata, Nara, and Oita. This initiative is designed to promote empathy and insight towards those individuals suffering from social withdrawal, often due to societal intolerance towards diversity. By listening to their stories, we can begin to dismantle the barriers that keep them isolated.
At each venue, participants will engage in panel discussions, workshops, and various activities focused on experiencing and expressing feelings related to hikikomori. Expert panelists—including hikikomori individuals, their families, and support organizations—will share their experiences, aiming to enhance empathy and encourage dialogue. For those who cannot attend in person, the panel discussions will also be accessible via online streaming.
Workshop to Build a Vibrant Community
The second part of the initiative will consist of workshops where attendees can brainstorm on creating inclusive communities based on the insights shared by hikikomori individuals. Utilizing local resources and ideas, participants will collaborate to design ways to establish supportive and accepting connections. The workshops intend to foster a spirit of understanding and bridge gaps within communities.
A highlight of the caravan is a unique workshop hosted by Amon Miyamoto, a renowned director and a hikikomori experience holder, in Kanagawa. Participants will engage in a life-drama workshop that mirrors the experiences of hikikomori individuals, helping deepen mutual understanding among participants through role-playing.
Collaborating for Change
The initiative is backed by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, with support from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Several knowledgeable committee members, comprising hikikomori individuals, their families, and advocacy organizations, contribute their insights to this project. PAL System actively participates as a co-op, aiming to extend awareness and education concerning hikikomori to a wider audience.
In addition to the caravan, PAL System engages with the community through its information media, KOKOCARA, and local activity magazines that facilitate discussions and collaborative initiatives, such as the "Hikikomori Women’s Gathering," to provide spaces for those affected by hikikomori to share their stories.
Moving forward, PAL System remains committed to listening to diverse voices and working toward a community where everyone can thrive. Through initiatives like the Hikikomori Voice Station Nationwide Caravan, they seek to dismantle barriers and foster connections that allow individuals to live comfortably and openly within society.
