A Revolutionary Event to Challenge Unconscious Bias in Tokyo

On August 5, 2026, Tokyo hosted its inaugural joint event, the "Doctor Hatnial Laboratory 2026", in collaboration with the Unconscious Bias Research Institute. The initiative aimed to empower children to explore their potential beyond gender stereotypes. With over 2,800 registrations, around 280 elementary school students, accompanied by parents and teachers totaling approximately 550 participants, immersed in a unique, interactive learning experience.

Beginning with Understanding Unconscious Bias

The event kicked off with an introductory session explaining "Unconscious Bias", also known as "Ancon". Participants learned that various biases exist in their surroundings, illustrated through specific examples such as gender-related stereotypes in professions. The day encouraged children to recognize the subconscious biases that may influence their thinking.

Diverse Experiences to Update Perspectives

The event featured five thematic workshops facilitated by participating companies, designed for children to discover their own biases in enjoyable and engaging ways. In groups, they navigated through the two doors they drew from a lottery and participated in interactive activities that broadened their outlooks.

1. The Snack Door - Morinaga Seika Co., Ltd.

Through specially crafted "Hi-Chew" candies made for the event, students learned to appreciate the importance of individual perception and the need to respect differences among people.

2. The Possibility Door - Mizuno Corporation

This workshop emphasized that age, gender, height, or body type should not limit one’s abilities. Encouraging students to challenge the thought of "I can't do it", they were motivated to pursue their ambitions and expand their horizons.

3. The Karuta Door - Panasonic Industry Co., Ltd.

Using an original "Ancon Karuta" deck focused on unconscious bias, students engaged in a karuta game while sharing personal stories that raised awareness about their own biases.

4. The Momotaro Door - Hiroshi Yamazaki & Akane Obata (Hakuhodo Creative Bureau)

Reflecting on the classic story of "Momotaro", participants discussed how viewing the story from the perspective of the ogre could foster empathy and understanding of different viewpoints.

5. The Frozen Foods Door - Nichirei Corporation

Participants conducted microwave experiments that instilled knowledge about frozen food technologies while also encouraging them to identify their biases, linking these realizations to potential new ideas and innovations.

Seminar for Parents and Educators

This year’s event also marked the first seminar aimed at parents and teachers. Led by Representative Director Tomo Takemura of the Unconscious Bias Research Institute, the session highlighted how often children experience gendered assumptions, such as being told, "Boys should do this, and girls should do that". Insightful discussions unfolded as teachers shared their observations from classes incorporating discussions on biases, offering a reflection on their interactions with children and recognition of their potential.

Presentations by Past Participants

During the closing session, children from previous events presented their experiences, demonstrating personal growth and awareness gained since their participation in the workshops. For instance, Reika Oowaki highlighted her realization regarding leadership roles in cheer dance, challenging the idea that only sixth graders could lead. Similarly, Yuugo Miyata shared how he recognized his own unconscious bias in academics which has transformed his perspective towards learning.

Ancon Discovery Corner

A designated area, "Ancon Discovery Corner", provided attendees the chance to engage freely with various activities and learn more about unconscious bias. Certified trainers facilitated experiences that inspired further understanding among students about common biases encountered in daily life.

Conclusion

The overwhelming feedback from participants indicates a significant impact on their understanding of unconscious bias, enabling them to approach their dreams without limitations. Looking ahead, Tokyo aims to foster initiatives that support children in breaking free from gender constraints and realizing their full potential.
