National Road Safety Foundation Honors Resource Officers for Innovative Teen Safe Driving Programs

National Road Safety Foundation Recognizes Safe Driving Initiatives by School Resource Officers

In a notable effort to promote safe driving habits among youth, the National Road Safety Foundation (NRSF) and the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) are calling for nominations for the 2025 Innovation in the Classroom Award. This initiative acknowledges school resource officers (SROs) who creatively engage students in learning about safe driving behavior.

The award not only highlights exemplary teaching methods but also recognizes the integral role of SROs in fostering a safety-conscious environment in educational settings. Nominations are now open, and the deadline for submissions is March 31, 2025.

Award Details

The recipient of the Innovation in the Classroom Award will receive various prizes, which include travel and registration to the NASRO National School Safety Conference taking place in Grapevine, Texas, from July 6-11, 2025. Alternatively, they may choose to participate in several for-credit training programs offered throughout the year by NASRO. To further honor their contributions, the winning officer's state SRO association will receive a $250 grant from NRSF. The winner will also be featured in the upcoming fall edition of The Journal of School Safety, underscoring their impactful work.

Mo Canady, the executive director of NASRO, emphasized the significance of this recognition, stating, "The Innovation in the Classroom program is a way to identify and reward teaching excellence in traffic safety, as well as share best practices with school resource officers in classrooms nationwide." This focus on excellence in teaching safe driving prepares young individuals to make informed decisions as they approach driving age.

Michelle Anderson from the NRSF echoed this sentiment, asserting, "The safe driving and positive decision-making that school resource officers encourage helps keep young people safe as they learn to drive and can carry well into their adult lives." With a proud history of over 60 years, NRSF is committed to reducing road accidents and promoting safer driving practices.

Nomination Process

Nominations for this prestigious award can be made by submitting a brief video that showcases the SRO's teaching techniques and their effectiveness in engaging students. This creative approach allows officers to illustrate the various strategies they implement to convey the message of safe driving to their respective student bodies.
