Tackling Child Poverty in Okinawa through Innovative Solutions
Nessu Inc. is addressing the critical issue of child poverty in Okinawa by implementing a sustainable system that leverages hometown tax donations. Led by CEO Yuki Kido, Nessu recently took the stage at the "OKINAWA Startup Program 2025-2026 Demo Day" on February 20, 2026. This program is designed to foster innovative startups in Okinawa since its inception in 2017.
The program's selection process involved a careful evaluation of 65 applicants from across the nation based on their innovation, uniqueness, and contribution to solving social issues in Okinawa. Nessu stood out among only eight chosen companies, showcasing its potential to make a substantial impact on the local community.
A Staggering Challenge: Child Poverty in Okinawa
Okinawa has one of the highest child poverty rates in Japan, with a staggering 29.9% reported in 2014, almost double the national average. This issue is compounded by the island's geographical challenges, which make it particularly vulnerable to rising living costs, notably in food prices.
During his pitch, Kido highlighted the pressing need for more than just temporary support. He argued for a shift towards a sustainable system that ensures access to food and opportunity for all.
