Okayama University Delegates Participate in Sino-Japanese Student Exchange Program in Fujian

Okayama University's Cultural Exchange in Fujian Province

In mid-April 2025, a group of ten students from Okayama University participated in the Sino-Japanese Student Exchange Program, which took place in Fujian Province, China. Led by Akihiro Nakamura, the head of the International Education Promotion Office, the delegation aimed to strengthen mutual understanding and friendship between Japanese and Chinese university students.

The program was organized by the Consulate-General of China in Osaka, along with the Fujian Provincial People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. During their visit from April 16 to 20, the students explored various historical and cultural sites in Fuzhou and Xiamen.

In Fuzhou, the students started their journey at the historical area of Sanfang Qixiang, known for its well-preserved structures from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. They also visited famous temples such as the Kaiyuan Temple and the Huangbo Mountain Wanfujisi, immersing themselves in the rich history of Buddhist cultural exchanges between Japan and China. Additionally, they had the chance to attend a demonstration and even participate in the traditional martial art of Huzunquan, thereby gaining firsthand experience of Chinese culture.

Moving on to Xiamen, the group visited Jimei Academic Village and the Tan Kah Kee Memorial Hall, enhancing their understanding of educational and cultural exchanges in the region. At the Transparent Island Cross-Strait Cultural Creative Center, the students engaged in lively discussions with local students and professionals in the creative industry, providing them insights into modern Chinese culture.

The trip culminated in a visit to Gulangyu Island—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—where the students enjoyed the harmonious blend of historical architecture and beautiful natural scenery.

Feedback from participating students reflected a deep appreciation for the warmth of their Chinese counterparts. They expressed their excitement, saying, “We were deeply touched by the warm welcome from local students and professionals.” One student noted, “I was able to experience a side of China that is not typically presented in the Japanese media, which has broadened my perspective.” Another reflected on the ancient Chinese poem, "Hai nei cun zhi ji, tian ya ruo bi lin," emphasizing the profound connections forged across distances through heartfelt friendships.

Notably, interactions with local university students allowed them to discuss shared interests and future aspirations, fostering friendships that transcended borders. This exchange program created a valuable opportunity for students from both nations to understand each other's cultures and histories, ultimately strengthening their bonds of friendship. The participating students returned with newly invigorated ambitions to leverage their learnings in future international exchange activities.

In the summer, a debriefing session will be held at the Chinese Consulate-General in Osaka, where students and staff from various universities across western Japan will come together to share their experiences from the exchange program. For updates, more information will be shared via Okayama University's official Instagram account dedicated to international studies.

This cultural exchange demonstrates Okayama University's commitment to fostering global perspectives and experiences for its students, aligning with its mission to support the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
