Okayama University Students Shine at JUEMUN 2026
From July 10 to 12, 2026, 15 enthusiastic students from Okayama University participated in the Japan University English Model United Nations (JUEMUN 2026), held at Kobe City Foreign Language University. Under the guidance of Associate Professor Tim Cleminson from the university's Global Education program, these students embraced the challenge of representing various countries, including Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, India, Latvia, and Paraguay.
Understanding the Importance of JUEMUN
JUEMUN serves as a simulation of United Nations meetings, allowing students to assume the role of ambassadors debating crucial international issues. This educational initiative aims to enhance students' understanding of global challenges while improving their language skills, negotiation abilities, logical thinking, and discursive competencies necessary for international communication. This year, the theme “Building a Gender Inclusive Society” attracted participation from 193 students across 16 universities and 26 countries.
Participants engaged in discussions concerning pressing topics such as:
- - Protecting women and girls from gender-based violence
- - Promoting women’s economic participation
- - Ensuring women’s involvement in political decision-making and peace-building processes
This diverse exchange of ideas among students facilitated rich dialogues, providing invaluable insights into the complexities surrounding these global issues.
Preparation and Engagement
Leading up to the event, the participating students prepared rigorously through an “English Diplomacy” course, which equipped them with the research and negotiation skills necessary to succeed. They conducted extensive research and practiced collaboration across cultures to propose effective resolutions. Their hard work exemplifies the collaborative spirit and dedication to fostering a more inclusive global society.
Tim Cleminson remarked on the importance of such events, stating, “This experience not only enhances our students' academic skills but also fosters a deep sense of responsibility towards the global community.” The university’s commitment to nurturing global talent was evident in the students’ unwavering dedication and insightful contributions.
A Platform for Growth
Joining JUEMUN represents a significant opportunity for Okayama University's students, aligning perfectly with the institution's mission of developing globally-minded individuals. Such experiences allow students to apply their academic learning in real-world contexts, thus enhancing their future career prospects. As they navigated complex discussions, they not only represented their respective nations and universities but also emerged as advocates for change.
Looking Ahead
As Okayama University continues to champion global talent cultivation, we eagerly anticipate further initiatives that inspire students to engage with pressing international issues. The experience at JUEMUN 2026 serves as a testament to the university's growing influence within the global academic community.
