BAIC FOTON Unveils Heavy-Duty Trucks and Hybrid Pickup for African Market
BAIC FOTON Expands Its Product Lineup in Africa
On October 29, 2026, BAIC FOTON launched two heavy-duty trucks, the GALAXUS R5 and GALAXUS C5, alongside a plug-in hybrid pickup, the TUNLAND V PHEV, during their African partner conference held in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The conference revolved around the theme "Drive to Great" and was aimed at improving logistics and mobility solutions across diverse African markets.
Introducing Advanced Heavy-Duty Solutions
The GALAXUS R5 is designed for long-haul transportation, cross-border logistics, and port operations. It boasts a remarkable aerodynamic profile with a drag coefficient of just 0.476 and offers two powertrain combinations to cater to different operational needs. This truck prioritizes efficiency, energy savings, safety, and comfort, making it an ideal choice for high-frequency long-distance operations. Furthermore, it has passed various crash tests according to the ECE R29.03 standard, ensuring safety for drivers. Comfort features include a spacious cabin, wider sleeping berth, and advanced seating from Grammer, enhancing the long-trip experience for drivers. Additionally, it is equipped to handle high temperatures and coastal conditions, and it comes with a generous warranty of three years or 450,000 kilometers.
On the other hand, the GALAXUS C5 is built to tackle heavy loads in mining and civil engineering sectors, as well as timber transport. This robust vehicle features advanced off-road capabilities, offering an impressive ground clearance of over 750 mm, with an approach angle of 30.5° and a departure angle of 31°. Its frame is constructed from high-strength steel, showcasing a durable 16-ton axle and heavy-duty suspension ready for the most challenging terrains. Rigorous testing has ensured its reliability, having undergone over 860,000 km on real roads while implementing 58 anti-corrosion measures. This makes the GALAXUS C5 a reliable option for operations in humid, dusty, and coastal environments.
The TUNLAND V PHEV: A Hybrid Solution
The introduction of the TUNLAND V PHEV marks a significant step in promoting new energy solutions in the region. Featuring a four-wheel-drive hybrid architecture, it houses a 2.0T hybrid engine paired with a four-speed DHT transmission. Together, they deliver an impressive 350 kW and 800 N•m of torque, promising robust performance along with an electric-only range of 87 km. Furthermore, it boasts an impressive WLTP combined range of 1,000 km and offers rapid charging capabilities of 32 kW, allowing it to reach 80% charge in just 30 minutes. This makes it another practical choice in minimizing reliance on public charging stations. The TUNLAND V PHEV comes with a towing capacity of 3.5 tons and features important safety specifications such as a mechanical lock system (MLOCK) and electronic differential locks at both ends.
