Supporting Child Cafes through Unused New Year Cards and Books: A Growing Movement
In recent years, many companies and schools are coming together to support child cafes, an initiative led by the certified NPO Musubie based in Shibuya, Tokyo. Through the winter campaign called 'Monokifu,' which encourages the donation of unused New Year cards, finished books, and other items, they aim to foster a society where no one is left behind.
What is 'Monokifu'?
'Monokifu' is designed to help individuals donate items they no longer need, such as books, DVDs, stamps, and even precious metals. Donors send these items in, and the purchase proceeds go to Musubie, furthering their mission to support child cafes across Japan. Launched in November 2025, the campaign has already received over 100 donations. Notably, participation from both individuals and organizations has significantly increased, showcasing a growing circle of support.
Expanding Participation from Companies and Schools
This winter's campaign has seen a twofold increase in participation from corporate and educational institutions compared to last year. Employees and students who support 'Monokifu' are actively promoting the initiative within their workplaces and schools, raising awareness and prompting action.
School Contributions: Inspiring Young Generations
One notable example comes from Osaka City’s Tsukuda Junior High School, where the student council rallied the entire student body. They collected an impressive 278 books to donate after spreading the word through original skits during school assemblies and book collection drives. Plans are in motion to encourage similar contributions at regional events as well.
Corporate Contributions: Fostering Social Responsibility
Various companies are also engaging with 'Monokifu,' encouraging employees to participate in volunteerism and social activities. For instance, an IT company noted that their outreach led many employees to feel more inclined to join in. A manufacturing firm highlighted their annual employee gathering where they collected goods, with plans to set up permanent donation points in their offices.
The ease of participating in 'Monokifu' fosters an atmosphere of social responsibility and community engagement.
The Need for Support in Challenging Times
Despite the growth of child cafes, many operators face difficulties due to rising costs. According to Musubie's 2025 survey on the status and challenges of child cafes, over 80% of respondents felt the pinch of inflation. Complaints about decreased food donations and increased costs for essential items highlighted the urgent need for additional support.
Child cafes serve as vital community spaces, offering inclusive environments for children and people of all ages to connect. However, the ongoing supply challenges continuously test their capabilities. In light of these issues, Musubie amplifies its call for donations through 'Monokifu' as a way to assist these invaluable initiatives.
As we approach the New Year, the recent announcement of winning numbers for New Year’s greeting cards boosts interest in organizing leftover items. Providing a small donation can make a significant difference, encouraging everyone to contribute in their own way to support child cafes.

What are Child Cafes?
Child cafes, also known as community kitchens or everyone’s homes, are free or low-cost eateries where children can feel safe coming alone. They are often self-managed initiatives providing a place for various generations to connect while dining. Not only do they play a role in creating vibrant communities, but they also help address issues like loneliness, isolation, and poverty, creating a nurturing environment for all.
In 2025, it has been surveyed that there are over 12,601 child cafes nationwide, exceeding the number of public middle schools in Japan. The organization Musubie actively works to ensure these cafes remain accessible and contribute positively to society.
