Recent Conference in Wenzhou Explores Ancient Port of the Maritime Silk Road

In the vibrant coastal city of Wenzhou, Eastern China, a significant conference was recently convened to discuss breakthrough discoveries relating to the ancient Shuomen Port. Organized by prestigious institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage and the National Center for Archaeology, the event attracted experts from various Chinese museums and research organizations aiming to fortify cultural connections tied to the maritime Silk Road.

The conference not only shed light on historical insights but also marked the inception of the Wenzhou Institute of Shuomen Ancient Port. Furthermore, the Wenzhou Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology received authorization to enhance its academic pledge under the institute's name. These developments signify important progress toward preserving local cultural heritage associated with the maritime Silk Road.

Liang Yanhua, the head of the Wenzhou Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, provided attendees with enlightening updates on the discoveries unearthed over the past few years at the Shuomen ancient harbor site. The excavations revealed a wealth of artifacts, showcasing the maritime exchanges that shaped the region's history. For instance, this year’s excavation efforts, covering an area of over 1,000 square meters, culminated successfully with significant findings that bridge chronological gaps pertaining to the ancient harbor’s coastal structures, dating from the Five Dynasties to the early Northern Song Dynasty.

A remarkable uncovering was made on the eastern side of Shuomen's outer fortress, where remnants of ancient roadways and residential regions were defined from the Southern Song to the Ming and Qing dynasties. This discovery vividly illustrates the spatial integration of the harbor city, revealing its historical significance within trade networks of the time. The conclusion of a two-year excavation effort, involving the survey and excavation of Shipwreck No. 2, unveiled several disparities with shipwrecks found in Fujian Province while drawing parallels to Shipwreck No. 1, hinting at the presence of a possible ancient shipyard in Wenzhou.

Overall, these archaeological findings serve as tangible evidence of Wenzhou’s pivotal role in the heritage campaign for the maritime Silk Road. They further promote a deeper understanding of China’s rich civilization and the need for enhanced efforts in protecting local heritage sites. The conference culminated in renewed commitments from involved parties to collaborate and bolster efforts aimed at cultural protection and heritage recognition on both regional and global scales. Consequently, Wenzhou's burgeoning historical narrative continues to unfold, reminding us of the profound connections forged between cultures through trade and exploration along the historical maritime Silk Road.
