Special Spring Break Experience in Japan's National Diet for Children

A Unique Experience for Children at Japan's National Diet

In March 2026, over 12,000 child cafeterias nationwide have evolved into spaces fostering social skills among children in Japan. One of these, "Nuku Nuku," located in Edogawa Ward, operates as an emergency response childcare facility open 24/7, under the management of the NPO, Lion Heart. The organization engaged local companies and supporters to provide children with diverse extracurricular activities, expanding their horizons and future options.

This year, as part of these activities, we organized the "2nd Nuku Nuku Spring Break Tour and Child Cafeteria at the National Diet," situated in Japan’s heart.

A Connection Built Over Ten Years

The successful realization of this initiative came thanks to Mr. Yohei Onishi, the Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs. To us, Mr. Onishi is not just a politician; he has been a significant supporter of our endeavors since our inception ten years ago when we were merely a voluntary organization. Even during his non-political years, he consistently visited the child cafeteria, embodying the supportive local figure we all relied upon.

Sharing meals together and witnessing children’s growth fostered a brotherly bond between us. This personal connection allowed us to offer children a "special experience in a unique setting" they will remember.

Support from the Community

On the event day, children gathered excitedly at 8:45 AM at Nuku Nuku, ready for an extraordinary adventure. Local entrepreneur Mr. Takahashi, owner of the 'Yakatabune Takahashi Maru', personally drove the microbus that took the kids to the Diet. Such community-led support, where local businesses willingly contribute resources, showcases the power that Lion Heart has cultivated within the region.

With a shout of encouragement, the microbus hit the road, and the anticipation was palpable among the children.

A Special Guide

Upon reaching the National Diet, Mr. Onishi’s secretary provided an exclusive guided tour. They shared fascinating insights about places that regular elementary school tours never encounter, unveiling intricate political histories and knowledge that captivated even the adults.

The last time we hosted this event, there was a snowball fight outside the Diet after a heavy snowfall, but this year coincided with the final budget committee session, infusing the space with a palpable energy as the children felt the realities of a government in action. They experienced firsthand that the world they see on TV directly impacts their lives.

A Heartwarming Lunch

The main event of the day was the "Child Cafeteria at the Diet," held in the member cafeteria. The joyful cries of "Itadakimasu!" (Let's eat!) resonated throughout the cafeteria, where children savored meals reflecting the lessons learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake, promoting a meaningful dialogue about history while enjoying delicious food.

Inspiring Future Generations

After returning to Edogawa, the children expressed their gratitude to Mr. Onishi and reflected on their experiences by writing heartfelt messages.

"I want to become a member of the National Diet someday," they said, highlighting the value of this project. Experiencing real politics transformed their perception of governance from being distant to recognizing it as a space that influences their futures. We aim to cultivate adults who will actively participate in their communities and society.

Lion Heart will continue offering not only daily support like this child cafeteria but also educational activities and excursions, providing all children with enriching and happy life choices.

Voices from the Children

Several children shared their experiences:
  • - "I thought the places I saw on TV were intimidating, but the secretary kindly guided us, showing it’s a place for us!" (5th grader)
  • - "The food in the member cafeteria was really delicious. I want to work here when I grow up!" (4th grader)
  • - "Mr. Onishi welcomed us with the same smile he has when he visits, making it a day I truly felt the presence of the Diet." (2nd year middle school student)

This initiative has garnered high praise from parents, with many noting how their children became more interested in politics and news upon returning home and how they felt connected to the National Diet.

Moreover, Mr. Onishi took the time to engage with each child during his busy schedule, offering them a chance to see a community leader up close, creating an invaluable role model for them.

Future Developments

NPO Lion Heart plans to combine "everyday places" with experiences that expand children's awareness of being active community participants. Beyond just visiting the National Diet, we will incorporate farm experiences and company visits to encourage children to recognize their role in society.

As we continue to walk this path alongside partners who share our vision, we aim to bridge the gap between children and society, fulfilling our mission of enriching every child’s life.
