BE OPEN Reveals Winners of 2050 Designing Futures Competition Aligned with UN Sustainability Goals

In a significant recognition of youthful innovation, BE OPEN proudly announced the winners of the Designing Futures 2050 competition, its sixth international event dedicated to inspiring young talents to address global sustainability challenges. This initiative, which highlights the importance of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aims to empower students, graduates, and young professionals to create impactful solutions for a better future.

The competition, launched in 2019 by BE OPEN, recognizes the critical urgency for young professionals in creative and engineering industries to engage in sustainability. Over the years, the initiative has successfully conducted five competitions on different SDGs, including Food Security and Climate Action, while consistently gathering exceptional projects that reflect the creativity and dedication of young people worldwide.

Elena Baturina, the founder of BE OPEN, emphasized the importance of this endeavor: For the past six years, we at BE OPEN have aimed to nurture the next generation's talents, equipping them with knowledge and inspiring them to lead sustainable changes. Each year, we see a remarkable array of innovative projects from young visionaries around the globe. Our objective is to provide them with opportunities for collaboration and expressive creativity, encouraging them to take ownership of their futures.

The Designing Futures 2050 competition specifically focuses on the practical application of sustainability principles by surfing through innovative ideas that can catalyze a global transition towards efficient sustainability practices. The young creatives participating in the competition are encouraged to reevaluate the SDG agenda to fit contemporary realities, potentially influencing effective action plans for sustainability.

To assess the submissions, BE OPEN enlisted an esteemed international jury composed of experts in futures studies and academia. This panel included renowned figures from various fields: Professor Jennifer Gidley, a leading futures researcher; Victor Vahidi Motti, co-founder of the Alternative Planetary Futures Institute; and a variety of other professionals invested in designing sustainable futures.

The winners of the competition have been awarded as follows:
1. First Prize: A grant of 5000 euros was awarded to Ajisafe Damilola Ifeoluwa from Nigeria for his project titled "Redefining Global Healthcare: Adjusting the SDGs for Scalable Practical Impact."
2. Second Prize: Co-winners each received a grant of 2500 euros. Foday David Kamara from Rwanda was recognized for his project, "Ecovironment: Transforming Plastic Waste into Sustainable Construction Materials."
3. Second Prize (equal scoring): Adnan Hasyim Wibowo from Indonesia was also recognized for his project "AGASA: Algae for Sustainable Action, Blooming Sustainability Through Algae Installation."

While the jury's decision highlights creativity and innovative thought, the announcement of the winners for the Public Vote and the Founder's Choice prize from Elena Baturina is expected later this month.

With initiatives like Designing Futures 2050, BE OPEN continues to play a crucial role in stimulating awareness and action among young creators, building a pathway for them to become prominent leaders in the quest for a more sustainable and prosperous future. By focusing on education, motivation, and opportunity, BE OPEN not only champions creativity but also fosters a spirit of responsibility toward the planet.

Looking forward, BE OPEN anticipates that the ideas generated through this competition will inspire larger societal shifts in how we approach sustainability and innovation, paving the way for a more environmentally-conscious world.
