Historic Partnership to Advance Hindu Representation and Safety in America

The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) has proudly announced a groundbreaking partnership with the U.S. Department of Justice's Community Relations Service (CRS) to forge a path toward improved representation and safety for Hindu Americans. This initiative marks a significant step in addressing the prior lack of institutional engagement with the Hindu community in the United States.

Established in 1964, the CRS has worked closely with minority communities such as Jewish, Muslim, Arab, and Sikh groups over the years, yet the Hindu community has remained largely overlooked in its programming. With the advent of 'Engaging and Building Relationships with the Hindu American Communities,' this is now changing. CoHNA's involvement as a key subject matter expert began in early 2024, helping to shape this innovative program designed to enlighten mainstream America about Hindu culture and foster a deeper understanding of Hindu Americans.

Throughout the development phase, CoHNA provided essential feedback and engaged in extensive reviews to ensure accurate information about Hinduism was conveyed. Their contributions emphasized the proper representation of sacred symbols, including the Swastika, and sought to promote culturally sensitive language in CRS educational materials.

Nikunj Trivedi, President and Co-Founder of CoHNA, declared, "This is a historic moment for our community. For too long, Hindus in the U.S. have been excluded from institutional frameworks meant to address community concerns and combat discriminatory practices. We are proud to help fill this void and ensure our community's representation is recognized."

The absence of institutional engagement has notably resulted in growing online hate directed at Hindus, as well as physical attacks on individuals and temples nationwide, from California to New York. Additionally, Hindu professionals, particularly those on H-1B visas, face backlash often associated with their faith.

As the program materials are still under final review, CoHNA is optimistic that the DOJ has integrated their vital insights to guarantee an accurate and holistic depiction of the Hindu community. The forthcoming resources will be invaluable to enhance understanding among those unfamiliar with Hinduism, fostering mutual respect and cultural appreciation.

The four-hour in-person training initiative is tailored to educate law enforcement, community members, and public officials about Hindu customs, beliefs, and the civil rights challenges faced by this community. The program encompasses practical strategies aimed at improving engagement and communication between stakeholders and local Hindu members, thus nurturing trust and understanding.

Among the key advantages of the program are:

  • - Establishing a network of dependable community resources to support Hindu neighborhoods.
  • - Promoting respect and comprehension among a diverse array of communities and stakeholders.
  • - Cultivating trust and rapport with Hindu Americans to reinforce neighborhood bonds.

CoHNA expresses its heartfelt gratitude for the community's steadfast support and trust in its mission. The organization remains dedicated to collaborating closely with the DOJ to further refine and promote this program across the nation.

Nikunj Trivedi concluded, "We eagerly anticipate our continued partnership with the DOJ to advance a greater understanding of Hindu heritage and traditions. Together, we can create a more informed and inclusive society."
