Goodwill NYNJ Responds to Critical Food Insecurity

In the wake of a government shutdown that has led to the suspension of SNAP benefits, Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey (Goodwill NYNJ) is taking decisive steps to support its community. The organization is known for its mission to remove employment barriers and empower individuals, but the recent crisis has prompted additional measures to address urgent food insecurity.

As highlighted by Katy Gaul-Stigge, President and CEO of Goodwill NYNJ, food insecurity profoundly impacts mental health, job stability, and overall well-being. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Goodwill NYNJ is determined to ensure that no talent is abandoned, especially when times are tough.

Financial Commitment to Community Food Access

To alleviate the impact of the SNAP benefits suspension on families, Goodwill NYNJ is donating $15,000 from its Round Up program to prominent local food banks, including the Food Bank of NYC, the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern NY, and the Community FoodBank of New Jersey. These funds will help provide continued access to meals for individuals and families during these challenging times.

Moreover, the organization is investing around $100,000 in various short-term measures designed to expand food access and relief throughout its operational area. These initiatives demonstrate Goodwill NYNJ's commitment to community support in urgent times of need.

Employee Support Initiatives

Goodwill NYNJ acknowledges that the repercussions of the government shutdown impact not just the communities it serves, but also its dedicated staff members. Therefore, the organization has introduced an Employee Assistance Program that offers temporary stipends and resources for employees affected by the SNAP disruption. This program, which commenced on November 3, provides much-needed help during this tumultuous period, enhancing staff morale and stability.

Additionally, to further support its team, Goodwill is initiating mini food pantries at select locations, stocked with essentials like bread and soup. During the upcoming holiday season, grab-and-go meals will also be available to staff and their families, reinforcing the belief that strong teams build resilient communities.

Support for Participants and Clients

Goodwill NYNJ is also proactively addressing the needs of participants and clients who may be at risk of food insecurity. The organization will distribute Instacart gift cards funded by itself as a temporary measure, ensuring that individuals can maintain their care and stability while working towards employment and independence.

In line with these initiatives, Goodwill NYNJ is publishing a comprehensive resource guide that includes information on local food pantries, soup kitchens, financial assistance services, and updates regarding SNAP benefits to help the public navigate available support.
