National Children's Center Launches Read Across America Initiative in Celebration of Literacy

National Children's Center Initiates Read Across America

The National Children's Center (NCC) has proudly launched its Read Across America campaign, which commenced on March 3, 2025. The kickoff event featured a storytime session led by Abria Law, an alumna of the Early Learning and Early Intervention Center (ELC) at NCC, alongside LaJoy Johnson-Law, the Ward 8 representative from the DC State Board of Education (SBOE).

Located in the vibrant Congress Heights neighborhood, this event aimed to engage young children in the joys of reading and ignite their imaginations. During the storytime, Abria and LaJoy captivated the children's attention while reading and interacting with them, setting the stage for a week filled with reading-related activities and celebrations.

Following the engaging storytime session, Charlene Polk, the Family Engagement Manager at NCC, took over to lead a series of exciting activities known as Spirit Week, running from March 3 to March 7. This initiative is all about encouraging parents and community partners to actively participate in reading with the children, fostering a culture of literacy and imagination.

Terrance King, President and CEO of NCC, expressed his thoughts on the importance of reading, stating, "Reading creates a space for imagination and allows children to envision endless possibilities. They can laugh, feel the excitement, and be inspired. We encourage all families, community leaders, and children's authors to participate in this exciting week of events as we kick off March for Read Across America with a bang!"

The Early Learning and Early Intervention Center is dedicated to nurturing a love for reading across children of varying abilities through engaging activities and extensive community support. With over 30 years of experience, ELC has been instrumental in supporting thousands of children, including those who are medically fragile, as well as those with both typical and atypical development.

The NCC has been a prominent non-governmental provider of services and community programs for infants, children, and adults with or without disabilities throughout the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area for over 65 years. Their mission has been to advocate for individuals, equipping them with the necessary skills for living, growing, working, and thriving.
