Faith Beyond Exclusion: A Call to Confront Division
The 2026 Earl Lecture Series, titled "Faith Beyond Exclusion," is set to take place at the Pacific School of Religion (PSR) on September 25 and 26. In an era where religion is frequently wielded as a tool for division, this gathering seeks to harness the power of faith as a source of liberation, inclusivity, and hope. The event aims to mobilize faith communities and leaders, advocating for a united front against exclusionary practices prevalent in today's society.
As the nation nears critical midterm elections, the two-day lecture series promises to articulate a clear religious perspective rooted in the Christian gospel, while also reflecting the values shared across various faith traditions. The gathering aims to challenge the misconceptions stemming from Christian nationalism and reaffirm the vital role faith can play in promoting a more inclusive society. This year's event is especially timely as it marks the 125th anniversary of the Earl Lectures, recognized as the longest-running public lecture series in the Western United States. Additionally, it signifies the 25th anniversary of the Center for LGBTQ+ and Gender Studies in Religion (CLGS) at PSR, which represents a landmark commitment to inclusivity in theological education.
Rev. Dr. David Vásquez-Levy, the President of PSR, emphasizes the urgency of this gathering. He states, "We gather because the moment demands it. When religion is being used to divide and exclude, and government steps back from its responsibility to help create a world where all can thrive, churches and faith communities have both a duty and an opportunity to step forward—to build community, create hope, and proclaim a faith that liberates." This clarion call is grounded in PSR's long tradition of pioneering efforts to uplift marginalized voices.
The weekend will kick off with a Distinguished Alumnx Banquet on Friday evening, followed by a varied and enriching program on Saturday. The agenda includes opening worship services, plenary lectures from prominent speakers such as Rev. Dr. Robert Chao Romero, an esteemed scholar and author, and Bishop Yvette A. Flunder, a trailblazer in advocacy for justice and inclusion in both religious and societal contexts. Their insights are anticipated to resonate deeply amid the current societal challenges.
An essential aspect of the Saturday's program will be the presentation of the inaugural Heralds of Welcome Awards, which celebrate individuals and organizations exemplifying the spirit of community and belonging. Furthermore, attendees can expect the launch of PSR's comprehensive fundraising campaign titled "Fearless," aiming to support the institution's ongoing initiatives and expansion.
Registration details and further information can be found on the PSR website. With topics at the forefront of community discussions, the Earl Lectures promise to be a transformative experience, emphasizing faith’s role in combatting exclusion and fostering a sense of belonging for all.
