Advancements in Automated Insulin Delivery
The 2026 European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) congress held in Milan marked a significant milestone in diabetes technology. SiBionics unveiled its ambitious initiative, "See More, Act Earlier," which aims to revolutionize the management of diabetes by linking continuous monitoring with proactive intervention strategies.
The Vision Behind SiBionics' Initiative
The initiative is structured around three core components:
See More Beyond Glucose, which focuses on the monitoring of glucose and ketones;
Act Earlier – From Insight to Intervention, which emphasizes the importance of multimodal detection and timely insulin administration; and
Go Further – Realizing the Unimagined, which explores broader applications of biological detection technologies.
During the symposium entitled
From Sensors to Integrated Care: Emerging Technologies Shaping the Future of Diabetes Management, various experts discussed the importance of integrating cutting-edge sensor technology to enhance diabetes care. The event was chaired by Professor Mark Evans from the University of Cambridge and Dr. Guido Freckmann from the Institute for Diabetes Technology in Germany.
Insightful Presentations
Prominent representatives in the field presented compelling topics at the symposium:
- - Professor Karolina Kędzierska-Kapuza discussed continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and personalized care for Type 3c diabetes.
- - Professor Wei Qiang elaborated on the accuracy of CGM and future multimodal detection concepts.
- - Professor Andrej Janež focused on continuous ketone monitoring, particularly relevant in the era of GLP-1 drugs.
- - Professor Ahmad Haidar presented findings from the SMART02 study, which investigates integrated glucose monitoring and insulin administration.
The SMART02 Study and the niia signature Prototype
The SMART02 study evaluated the initial prototype named
niia signature, a device collaboratively developed by PharmaSens and SiBionics. This experimental device is designed to incorporate CGM, automated insulin delivery, and a glucose control algorithm in a portable patch format. This innovation seeks to simplify the management of diabetes by minimizing the burden of multiple devices required for automated insulin delivery (AID).
One of the key challenges addressed was maintaining accurate glucose measurements during insulin administration, a vital consideration for integrated systems. Post-bolus measurement interference was infrequent, primarily occurring with doses of 10 units or more, with a return to normal sensor readings typically observed approximately 20 minutes after administration.
In the latter phase of the study, the prototype was tested with the automated glucose control algorithm developed by Professor Ahmad Haidar. The patch pump, along with SiBionics' sensor and the new algorithm, demonstrated consistent performance throughout the study period, marking a significant step in the development of integrated diabetes management solutions.
Bridging the Gap Between Clinical Needs and Technological Innovations
The exhibition and symposium highlighted the importance of aligning clinical demands with emerging technologies. With the
niia signature device, PharmaSens and SiBionics aim to explore ways to make future AID devices more user-friendly and easier to wear.
Further research efforts are essential to fully realize the clinical potential and operational efficiency of this pioneering technology. It's important to note that the
niia signature is an experimental medical device and is not approved for commercial use or available for sale at this time.
