Revitalizing Education: The School Make Project
As graduation approaches, a group of sixth graders in Kawasaki City are taking on an extraordinary initiative. Supported by Nikka Home Kanto, a company specializing in housing reform, the students are actively participating in the
School Make Project (SMP), an exploration-based learning program aimed at remodeling their school environment. This project has been underway since November of last year and is set to culminate with renovations of the school’s pool storage area between late January and early February 2026.
A Project Born From Comprehensive Learning
The SMP involves one class of sixth graders from a Kawasaki City elementary school who have engaged in discussions about how they can contribute to creating a comfortable atmosphere within their school. This initiative began after the summer break when the students brainstormed ideas about their abilities and possibilities.
Their findings led to the establishment of a remodeling plan aimed at transforming the pool storage space into a cozy environment where all students can enjoy their time. This project is not just about aesthetics but embodying their appreciation for the school they will soon leave behind.
Engaging with Experts for Hands-On Experience
Staff from Nikka Home Kanto branch are serving as instructors for this project, visiting the students in November 2025 and January 2026. Rather than giving direct answers, the experts provide insights that encourage the students to think critically about their plans. This includes discussing safety measures, durability, and feasibility of their ideas, fostering an environment where students can express their creativity and problem-solving skills.
Final Touch: Painting with Heart
In the concluding phase of the project, the external painting of the pool storage area will take place. The students will collaborate with Nikka Home staff, actively engaging in the painting process. This shared effort not only reinforces their teamwork but also symbolizes their gratitude towards the school that has supported them throughout their education. The materials needed for this phase are being sourced through collaboration with the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA).
Community-Driven Remake Initiatives
Nikka Home has a history of engaging with local schools and communities through similar remaking initiatives. One notable past project was the
Art Wall Project, where the Central Japan branch worked alongside students to paint the school's entrance, enhancing the local educational environment.
Utilizing their expertise in home construction and renovation, Nikka Home’s role extends beyond business, contributing to the development of future generations and strengthening the community.
Supporting Learning Rooted in Community
Looking ahead, Nikka Home is committed to supporting continuous learning experiences through
