Understanding Japan Through 'MIRAI'
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is spearheading an international exchange initiative known as the 'MIRAI' program, aimed at bolstering understanding of Japan among participants from various countries. For this initiative's first group, 14 individuals from Western Balkan nations—including Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia—are set to visit Tokyo and Hiroshima to deepen their appreciation of Japan from February 13 to February 19, 2026.
During their stay, participants will engage in various activities designed to promote mutual understanding and cultural exchange. Their journey begins at Sophia University in Tokyo, where they will have the opportunity to interact with faculty and peers through workshops and discussions focused on the theme of 'peace building.' These interactions are not merely academic; they aim to forge lasting connections between the future leaders of the Western Balkans and Japan, fostering a spirit of friendship and collaboration.
In addition to the educational aspect, the participants will hear prominent keynote speeches from officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which aims to provide insights into Japan's approach to peace building. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will also play a key role in this initiative, where attendees will learn about ongoing projects that support peace building efforts within the Western Balkans.
A particularly poignant part of their exchange will take place in Hiroshima, a city symbolizing resilience and recovery. Participants will visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, gaining firsthand insight into the realities of the atomic bombing and the subsequent efforts for reconstruction. They will also take part in a peace tour led by local guides to better understand the city's history and its significance in promoting peace and reconciliation.
The group will have the opportunity to witness the stunning natural beauty and architectural heritage of Japan during a visit to Miyajima Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, they can immerse themselves in the island's culture, history, and its unique environmental features.
As part of the MIRAI program, the participants will enhance their knowledge regarding Japan's strategies and challenges related to peace building. They will reflect on their experiences, considering how they can effectively communicate Japan's charm and the initiatives geared towards constructing a better future through collaborative efforts between Japan and the international community.
