Transitioning to the Food Sector: What Young Professionals Experience
In a groundbreaking survey conducted by Five Group, a company based in Musashino City, Tokyo, insights were gathered regarding the motivations and experiences of young professionals aged 20s who have made the leap into the food and beverage industry as part of their career development. This survey, titled
Real Experiences of Young Professionals Transitioning into the Food Industry 2025, sheds light on the satisfaction and fulfillment these individuals find in their new careers compared to their previous roles in various industries.
Diverse Backgrounds Driving Industry Change
The survey indicates that a significant portion of young professionals transitioning to the food industry come from diverse backgrounds. The majority transitioned from sectors such as manufacturing, construction, and real estate, while others moved from IT and consulting. In total, the most represented prior occupations included 19 individuals from manufacturing, construction, and real estate, followed by 16 from IT and consulting, and 15 from the retail and food sectors.
This trend emphasizes that a career in the food industry no longer requires prior experience in the sector. Instead, young professionals are seeking new challenges and opportunities to grow in a field that is often viewed as offering a gap between job satisfaction and the realities of work-life balance.
Job Satisfaction on the Rise
The survey reveals encouraging results regarding job satisfaction among young professionals after transitioning to the food sector. Approximately 71% of the respondents — 57 out of 80 individuals — expressed that their satisfaction improved after making the career switch. Notably, 59% reported high satisfaction levels, while 12% indicated they were very satisfied.
This finding suggests that many in the younger demographic find a sense of purpose and ease in their new roles, despite coming from backgrounds that were predominantly different from the food industry. However, it's also important to note that 19 individuals reported no change in their satisfaction levels, showcasing that circumstances can vary widely based on workplace environment and conditions.
Perceived Value and Job Fulfillment
When asked about the primary sources of fulfillment in their new roles, the most cited factor was direct appreciation from customers, gathering 43 votes. Other significant sources of satisfaction included the improvement of culinary and service skills, with 34 votes, and achieving team goals, with 28 votes. This indicates that young professionals are drawn to the interactive nature of the food service industry and the early opportunities for personal growth in their roles.
Interestingly, the majority of respondents began to feel a sense of purpose and fulfillment within six months of making their transition. Of the participants, 68% (54 individuals) reported feeling a sense of worthiness and meaning in their work within this timeframe. Among them, 12 felt it in the first one to three months, while 42 accomplished this in three to six months, reflecting fast-tracked engagement and satisfaction.
Growth Accelerated by Training and Mentorship
The combination of on-the-job training (OJT) and structured company training played a pivotal role in the young professionals' sense of growth. According to the survey, 41 individuals attributed their growth directly to OJT, and 34 cited in-house training programs. Additionally, 15 felt motivated by recognition programs that celebrate achievements, indicating the comprehensive support systems in place aimed at enhancing professional development.
Why Young Professionals Choose to Transition
The survey also gathered qualitative insights into why these young professionals decided to change careers. Many respondents mentioned the desire for personal growth or dissatisfaction with long working hours and low pay in their previous jobs as key factors influencing their decision to join the food industry. Others expressed a longing to work in an environment that nurtures skills and encourages direct interaction with customers.
