Strategic Investment for Fairness and Inclusion



In a significant move towards fostering an inclusive work environment, Randstad Japan has announced it will conduct training sessions focused on sexual orientation and gender identity awareness within its HR department. Scheduled for December 5, this initiative aims to enhance employees' skills and knowledge concerning SOGI issues, a fundamental component in creating a welcoming work culture for all. This initial focus on HR personnel is a strategic strategy designed to expand throughout the organization and ultimately contribute to societal change.

The Importance of HR Training



According to the Talent Trend Report 2025, conducted by Randstad across 21 countries, a remarkable 90% of executives recognize that the role of HR has become increasingly crucial and strategically significant. However, 69% still feel that HR is often invited to strategic discussions too late. This trend highlights the necessity for prioritizing HR training, ensuring that HR professionals are well-equipped for the evolving workforce landscape.

Moreover, recent surveys indicate that 46% of Generation Z workers encounter discrimination in their workplaces, with 31% having resigned due to discomfort linked to their sexual orientation or gender identity. This underscores the urgent need for training and resources aimed at fostering an inclusive work environment.

Identifying Specific HR Challenges



To address these pressing issues, Randstad undertook preliminary interviews with employees directly impacted by SOGI matters, as well as HR department leaders. One prominent challenge identified was the anxiety faced during hiring interviews; potential candidates worry about how interviewers might react if they were to come out during the interview process. There's also a concern that candidates may feel uncomfortable disclosing information about their identities if they don't see visible indications of understanding and inclusivity from the company.

Another significant challenge involves practical implementation in dealing with employees whose registered gender doesn't align with their identified gender. HR personnel often find themselves uncertain about appropriate practices for handling these situations, particularly regarding registration processes and direct communication with affected individuals.

The SOGI Training Program



In an effort to tackle these challenges head-on, Randstad will host a 90-minute hybrid training program, combining online and in-person sessions, led by Tomo Ogawa from the certified nonprofit organization Rainbow Diversity, which is dedicated to advocating for the rights and dignity of LGBTQ+ individuals and their families. The primary objective of this training is not only to equip participants with essential knowledge but also to encourage actionable steps that support all employees in feeling safe and valued at Randstad.

While the current training is tailored for the HR department, insights gained will also be shared with recruitment teams and coordinators who frequently interact with job candidates. There are plans to extend training content to hiring managers and business representatives, ensuring a widespread impact within the organization.
