Global Youth Dialogue on Chinese-Style Modernization in Guizhou
From July 2 to July 6, 2025, Guizhou hosted the Tsinghua Global Youth Dialogue, a remarkable convergence of vibrant young leaders from 14 different countries and regions, showcasing their perspectives on modernization through the lens of this unique province in China.
Under the theme "Opportune China, Youth Talks Insights into Chinese Modernization from Guizhou Practice,” this event aimed to not only foster dialogue among participants but also immerse them in the cultural, technological, and ecological practices of Guizhou, which has often been referred to as the "Mountain Park Province" due to its surreal landscapes and diverse ethnic communities.
The dialogue commenced with an exploration of Guizhou's natural wonders, including a visit to the Huangguoshu Waterfall, the largest waterfall in Asia. Participants were captivated by the majestic scenery and the province’s commitment to harmonizing economic development with environmental preservation. Nhial Deng, a young delegate from Kenya, expressed his admiration, noting, "Here, you can truly feel the harmony between humans and nature. China has shown that rapid development does not mean sacrificing culture or the environment."
Technological Innovations
One of the highlights of the dialogue was the demonstration of Guizhou’s advances in technology. In the Gui’an New Area, participants rode self-driving minibuses, reflecting China's ambitious goals toward establishing smart and sustainable urban solutions. Ignacio, an environmental organizer from Latin America, emphasized the significance of this progression, stating, "China is making substantial progress in addressing climate change through technology, which is crucial for the planet's future."
Cultural Heritage and Modern Expressions
The cultural immersion continued with a visit to the "Xiu Li Tao" intangible cultural heritage market in Kaili City. Here, international youth donned traditional ethnic costumes and engaged in the festive "Village Runway Show," celebrating local craftsmanship such as batik and Miao embroidery. Participants were moved by the local heritage being woven into modern artistry. Nadhira, a sustainability manager from Indonesia, insightfully remarked, "Traditional culture is alive here, passed down and innovated by young people. This is a powerful example for the world."
Technological Showcases
Furthering the exploration of innovation, participants visited the Bailin River Guizhou Bridge Technology Museum, which showcased digital twin technology and Building Information Modeling (BIM) as part of the region's impressive infrastructural advancements. Additionally, the "Red Banderole" museum presented an immersive digital history of China’s revolutionary past through the latest hologram and virtual reality technologies, captivating the imaginations of young leaders.
Fyodor Dmitrenko from Cyprus observed, "Guizhou's transformation from a less developed region to a digital economy leader exemplifies how modernization can be inclusive and people-centered."
As the Tsinghua Global Youth Dialogue concluded, the participants departed Guizhou enriched with new insights into Chinese-style modernization, ready to share the unique charm and diverse experiences of the province with the world. This gathering stands as a testament to the power of dialogue among youth in navigating the complexities of modernization in a rapidly changing global context.
The opportunity to witness and engage with the practices of modernizing China through Guizhou has left an indelible mark on the youth delegates, empowering them to become champions of sustainable development and cultural heritage preservation in their respective communities around the globe.
