A new report by Generation, an employment nonprofit organization, uncovers a notable trend: entry-level workers across various sectors and economies are rapidly adopting artificial intelligence (AI) tools. This significant shift not only streamlines their work processes but also enhances their job satisfaction. The findings stem from a comprehensive survey involving more than 5,500 Generation graduates from 2023 and 2024, focusing predominantly on individuals without a college degree.

A Widespread Adoption of AI Tools

According to the survey, a staggering 65% of entry-level employees report utilizing AI in their daily roles. The data highlights that half of these individuals have taken the initiative to adopt AI tools independently, while the remainder either uses employer-provided tools or combines both approaches. Among AI users, 79% engage with these tools at least once a week, particularly in the tech sector, where this figure jumps to an impressive 89%. Interestingly, 37% of respondents leverage AI on a daily basis.

Gender Disparities in AI Usage

Despite the overall enthusiasm for AI, there is a noticeable gender gap in its usage. The survey indicates that 53% of female entry-level workers use AI in their roles, compared to 76% of their male counterparts. However, within the tech sector, this divide narrows slightly, with 80% of women and 86% of men reporting AI usage. Gender disparities are less pronounced in customer service and sales, where 87% of employees in tech and 80% in sales are adopting AI. Conversely, the adoption in green economy sectors remains markedly low, with only 12% of entry-level employees utilizing AI tools.

Specifically, in the tech sector, 67% of respondents use AI across multiple functions such as learning (61%), content creation (49%), and administrative tasks (44%). In sectors like customer service and sales, the focus shifts towards content creation (43%) and learning (35%). Although the adoption rates are lower in green jobs and skilled trades, early adopters are primarily using AI for educational purposes and content generation.

Perceived Benefits and Global Context

The survey emphasizes that despite the uneven uptake of AI, the personal benefits reported by users are substantial. An impressive 94% of AI users believe that these technologies have noticeably improved their work capabilities, with about 63% stating that AI has significantly aided their job performance. Furthermore, 91% of respondents express that AI has made their work more enjoyable, with 59% experiencing a marked increase in job satisfaction. However, the perceived value of AI does vary significantly across countries, revealing a greater appreciation for AI’s impact in upper-middle-income nations compared to lower-middle-income and high-income countries.

Barriers to AI Adoption

While the report highlights a robust trend towards AI adoption, it's essential to note that 35% of entry-level employees remain disengaged from this technological shift. Among this group, 72% express an interest in utilizing AI but face obstacles, including a lack of training (30%), uncertainty about the relevance of AI to their jobs (30%), and time constraints (12%). Trust issues or doubts about the benefits are noted by only a small fraction of respondents.
