Citadel Heart of Learning Awards Recognize Outstanding Teachers
On May 5, 2025, Citadel Credit Union proudly announced the recipients of the 2025 Citadel Heart of Learning Awards (CHOLA). This esteemed recognition celebrates 32 exceptional teachers from the Greater Philadelphia area, including Bucks, Chester, Montgomery, Lancaster, Delaware, and Philadelphia Counties. The awards are emblematic of Citadel's 24-year commitment to enhancing educational opportunities through community support. This year, over $85,000 in grants were distributed, marking a significant 44% increase from the previous year, bringing the total amount given in grants to nearly $600,000 since the program's inception.
The Citadel Heart of Learning Awards were launched in 2001 in partnership with the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) to honor those educators who display remarkable dedication and make profound impacts in their students' lives. Every year, thousands of nominations are submitted by students, parents, and fellow teachers, but only a select few earn this prestigious recognition for their commitment to compassion, excellence, and leadership in education.
Citadel Credit Union believes strongly in supporting education as part of its broader community-focused Citadel Cares initiative. This program underlines their commitment to financial literacy, community wellness, and education. "We are honored to recognize those exceptional educators who exemplify Citadel's values of community service through the Heart of Learning Awards," said Bill Brown, the CEO of Citadel Credit Union. He highlighted that this initiative serves as an extension of their efforts to uplift the communities they serve.
Stephanie Nickens, Philanthropy and Community Engagement Program Manager at Citadel, echoed this sentiment, stating, "Each year, we are inspired by the resilience and creativity that these teachers demonstrate in nurturing the minds and hearts of their students. We are proud to champion their work and provide vital resources to support their ongoing efforts to make a difference."
Each award recipient receives a unique hand-blown glass heart symbolizing their achievement, along with a $1,000 grant. In an exciting development this year, one grand prize winner was selected from each county, resulting in six Grand Prize winners—doubling the number from previous years. These winners receive a personal award of $5,000, coupled with an additional $5,000 grant awarded to their school. Additionally, the Traci Watson Heart Award is conferred upon one recipient who exemplifies creativity and dedication in memory of a past Citadel colleague who significantly impacted the program.
