Takinogawa High School Deploys Unique Scholarship for Saitama Students

Takinogawa High School's New Initiative for Saitama Students

In a progressive move towards supporting its students, Takinogawa High School, located in Kita Ward, Tokyo, has recently announced its decision to provide unique monthly scholarships to students coming from Saitama Prefecture. Under this new initiative, starting with students enrolling after August 1, 2025, each Saitama resident will receive a monthly scholarship of ¥10,000, which can be used towards tuition fees at the free school.

This step has been taken in light of the existing disparities in financial support provided to students from different regions. While students residing in Tokyo can apply for the “Tokyo Free School User Support Program,” enabling them to receive up to ¥20,000 per month for elementary and middle school students, those from Saitama have been left without any form of assistance from their prefecture. Takinogawa High School aims to address this inconsistency with their scholarship program.

Currently, Takinogawa High School has 55 students enrolled, who actively engage in both academic and recreational activities. With the introduction of this scholarship, the financial burden on families of Saitama students seeking support may be significantly alleviated. For instance, if a student uses the school’s facilities once a week, the total fee per month would amount to ¥20,000 (including tax), while those attending five days a week would incur a cost of ¥30,000 (also inclusive of tax).

Furthermore, families who are already utilizing the Takinogawa High School services will benefit from this initiative starting in September, as they too will receive the ¥10,000 scholarship to help offset their tuition costs.

According to Takashi Toyoda, representative of Takinogawa High School and CEO of Jiyu Kyoiku Co., the scholarship will continue indefinitely until Saitama Prefecture implements similar subsidies for free school users, capturing the school's commitment to equality in education funding.

In addition to the scholarship for Saitama students, Takinogawa High School is also considering establishing similar financial support systems for students coming from Kanagawa and Chiba Prefectures, with plans aiming for implementation by the end of this year.

The location of the school, just a one-minute walk from Kita Akabane Station on the JR Saikyo Line, makes it easily accessible for students from southern Saitama, promoting an inclusive environment for all who wish to attend.
