Commons Investment Company Selects CoCoTELI's Toh Arai
In a significant move to bolster social entrepreneurship, Commons Investment Company, based in Minato, Tokyo, has announced Toh Arai of NPO CoCoTELI as the recipient of its 17th SEEDCap support program. A donation of 2 million yen will be provided to assist Arai’s initiatives focused on the mental health of youth from families affected by psychiatric conditions.
The Commons SEEDCap program, part of Commons Investment's ongoing commitment to social causes, has allowed them to allocate 1% of the trust fees from their Commons 30 Fund to support emerging entrepreneurs tackling social issues each year. The total donations accumulate over the year, with 2 million yen going to the selected recipient, while the remaining funds are distributed to previous awardees, termed as the “Okage” framework.
Understanding Commons Investment's Contribution Structure
Commons Investment emphasizes that sustainable business depends on both economic and social returns, making contributions to social causes integral to its operations. Their program, SEEDCap, encourages participation from fund beneficiaries, known as “Okama,” in selecting the annual recipient through a selection process that fosters awareness about social issues, encouraging donations and voluntary engagements.
The recipient for this year, Toh Arai, is recognized as a forefront leader in addressing the challenges faced by children and youths from families with mental health issues. He founded CoCoTELI, aiming to provide a platform for online consultations and safe spaces, making mental health resources accessible to young individuals who often feel isolated due to their family circumstances.
CoCoTELI and Its Mission
Founded as a student group, CoCoTELI was established to provide support for youths affected by parental mental illness. Arai's initiatives create opportunities for these young individuals to freely express their worries and challenges. The nonprofit employs various methods, including awareness campaigns and community outreach, to promote understanding of mental health issues in society.
Arai himself experienced hardships growing up with a father who suffered from depression, shaping his commitment to advocacy in this domain. The organization focuses not just on immediate support but also on preventive measures that provide necessary resources to families before crises arise, marking Arai's approach as forward-thinking in the social entrepreneurship landscape.
