In a significant leap toward sustainable energy, the Village of Monroeville, Ohio, has introduced the state's largest floating solar array, boasting a capacity of 6 megawatts. This innovative system, developed by D3Energy, floats atop the village's reservoir, optimizing space and resources in a region where land availability for solar panels has become increasingly limited.

A Leadership in Sustainability



D3Energy has installed 9,222 solar modules on three floating islands within the reservoir, efficiently utilizing 12 acres of water that were previously unproductive. Managing Director Stetson Tchividjian emphasized the ingenuity behind this project: “Solar needs space, and in farm country, there's no such thing as spare ground. Monroeville had water sitting right there doing one job. Now it does two.” This creative use of water surfaces not only preserves valuable farmland but also significantly enhances the village's renewable energy portfolio.

The floating array is Monroeville’s second solar energy initiative, following a successful ground-mounted solar project that has been operational since 2017, generating 4 megawatts. Combining both systems, the village of approximately 1,300 residents now benefits from a remarkable per capita solar capacity, producing about 13 times more solar energy per resident than the state average. This achievement marks Monroeville as a leader in renewable energy adoption within Ohio, placing it among the highest concentrations of solar energy per capita in the state.

D3Energy is committed to enhancing Ohio’s renewable infrastructure and has previously completed floating solar projects in other locations, including the Del-Co Water array in Delaware and the City of Lima's array on Twin Lakes Reservoir. Collectively, these projects bring Ohio's operational floating solar energy capacity to nearly 10 megawatts, making it the leading state in the Midwest for such initiatives. The collaboration involves partnerships with local utilities and private enterprises, ensuring that solar development occurs without encroaching on vital agricultural land.

D3Energy's Steve Gray highlighted the power of community leadership in making floating solar projects a reality, noting the pivotal role played by the recently retired village administrator, Tom Gray. “None of this happens without Monroeville's forward-thinking leadership,” Tchividjian remarked, underscoring the project’s commitment to harnessing renewable resources in the community.
