National Police Association Supports New Bill for Law Enforcement Mental Health Initiative

On December 19, 2025, the National Police Association (NPA) officially endorsed the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Suicide Prevention and Resiliency for Law Enforcement Act, highlighting the urgent need for improved mental health resources for dedicated law enforcement personnel. The act addresses a growing crisis: officers and agents within DHS face continuous exposure to trauma, burnout, and the pressures of working in volatile environments.

As public servants, these officers navigate high-stress situations almost daily, often leading to significant adverse effects on their mental health. The routine nature of their work, marked by long hours and physical threats, has contributed to an alarming rise in reported suicides among agency staff. Unfortunately, the prevailing stigma around mental health, coupled with concerns about job security, often deters officers from seeking the help they desperately need.

The DHS Suicide Prevention and Resiliency Act, also known as S. 2645 in the Senate and H.R. 6548 in the House, aims to confront these challenges by establishing a dedicated Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Program within the DHS. Introduced in the Senate by Senators Gary Peters and Josh Hawley, and in the House by Representatives Bennie Thompson and Andrew Garbarino, this bill is currently under review by relevant committees in both chambers of Congress.

The Need for Action

In remarks about the legislation, Paula Fitzsimmons, the Legislative Director of the NPA, expressed profound gratitude for the officers' commitment to public safety but emphasized the pressing need for comprehensive mental health support. She stated, "We ask our federal law enforcement officers to work endless shifts, stave off assaults and threats, and navigate hostile environments. These conditions can take a toll on anyone, even experienced officers. Along with our profound gratitude, we owe them access to the most effective and advanced mental health resources available."

This strategic initiative seeks to ensure that officers can access critical mental health services confidentially and without fear of negative repercussions. Fitzsimmons further added, "The DHS Suicide Prevention and Resiliency for Law Enforcement Act will help ensure that these brave men and women have access to life-saving support and resources on a confidential basis and without fear of retribution."

The NPA urges Congress to prioritize this legislation and affirms its gratitude to the sponsors for championing the cause of mental health support for law enforcement personnel. It is crucial for the government to recognize the sacrifices made by these officers and to provide them with the necessary wellness resources they deserve.

Joining the Call to Action

To foster positive change, the NPA calls on community members and stakeholders to join their Call to Action team, a platform designed to support anti-crime, pro-police initiatives. Participants who sign up receive up-to-date alerts regarding relevant legislative activities and information on how to advocate for critical changes within the law enforcement community.
