Empowering Children Through Unique Agriculture and Martial Arts Experience Event
On November 16, 2025, the Yumeiku Foundation organized the third edition of the "Agriculture x Martial Arts Experience" in Katori City, Chiba Prefecture. This innovative event aimed to foster resilience and teamwork among children through a combination of martial arts training and agricultural activities.
A Day of Learning and Fun
The program kicked off in the morning with a martial arts session led by Kazuo Misaki, a former PRIDE welterweight champion. The children learned valuable skills such as discipline, body movement, and respect while engaging in physical activities. Initially apprehensive, the participants gradually opened up, showcasing smiles and engaging in camaraderie as they encouraged one another throughout the session.
Following the martial arts training, the group moved to the fields for a sweet potato harvesting activity. The tactile experience of working with the dirt, the joy of harvesting, and the surprise at the weight of freshly picked sweet potatoes captivated the children, leading to a day filled with genuine enjoyment and focus.
Lunch featured a barbecue, incorporating fresh ingredients donated by local partners. This not only nourished the participants but also highlighted the community spirit and hospitality surrounding the event.
Voices of the Participants
The children and young participants had much to share about their experiences. One remarked, "I rarely get to exercise, so martial arts was super fun for me!" while another acknowledged, "I realized how out of shape I am (laughs). But it was a great opportunity!" These insights reflected both physical awareness and personal growth.
Others expressed profound satisfaction from the harvesting process, sharing sentiments like, "The moment I pulled the sweet potatoes was incredibly refreshing. I felt such a nice release!" and "Realizing the journey from harvest to sale helped me see the hidden side of what I eat." These reflections demonstrate the educational impact of the experience.
From Harvest to Kitchen
The sweet potatoes harvested during the event will be featured in the upcoming "Winter Cooking Class" on December 13, 2025. Participants will use these ingredients to create recipes for lunch and desserts, embodying the concept of "growing, making, and eating". This hands-on approach fosters a deeper understanding of food connections and nurtures the resilience and resourcefulness of the children involved.
