Short Drama Series to Raise Awareness on Hikikomori Experiences in Japan

Short Drama Series: 'Komo Real'

In December, the Pal System Union, as a part of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare initiative "Hikikomori Voice Station 2025," released a compelling short drama series titled "Komo Real" on its official YouTube channel. Consisting of six episodes, the series portrays the real-life experiences of hikikomori individuals, shedding light on their emotional journeys and struggles. This initiative aims to foster greater social understanding of the estimated 1.46 million hikikomori individuals in Japan, as identified by a Cabinet Office survey.

The series dives deep into the lives of these individuals, showcasing various moments that connect them back to society. Episode themes include a man's reconnection with society triggered by his mother's dementia, to another character finding companionship through online gaming as a way to escape reality. The narratives explore the deep-seated emotions harbored by individuals who have long avoided social interactions, often due to societal intolerance. Through these poignant episodes, viewers witness the transformative journey from despair to hope, as characters evolve from feelings of worthlessness to an understanding that simply existing has its own value.

Actors Ryoko Kuninaka and Yōji Tanaka portray the families of the hikikomori characters, capturing the complex emotions involved in supporting their loved ones. Their heartfelt performances illustrate how family members often worry about the future of their hikikomori relatives, revealing the unspoken burdens they carry as caregivers.

The exhibition features creative contributions from various artists, including director Amon Miyamoto and music creator Hyadain, translating hikikomori experiences into art forms such as music, visual installations, and poetry.

Creative Outreach and Future Plans

Beyond the drama and artwork, Pal System continues its mission to amplify voices from diverse backgrounds. They collaborate with local organizations, such as the Hikikomori Women's Association, to spread awareness and encourage dialogue surrounding mental health issues and social inclusion.

Additionally, the exhibit will incorporate new content regularly, ensuring it remains fresh and engaging for audiences. Pal System is committed to listening to the voices of those in various circumstances and creating communities where everyone can thrive and resonate.
