Okayama University Team Copain Shines at ILO Youth Congress Pitch Contest Finals

On July 17, 2025, a dedicated student team from Okayama University, known as Copain, made waves at the finals of the ILO Youth Congress Pitch Contest. This prestigious event was held at the EXPO Hall "Shine Hat" during the Osaka-Kansai Expo, organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO).

The contest was part of an international educational initiative where high school and university student teams proposed strategies to promote the right to work in a safe and healthy environment. Each of these groups underwent comprehensive training to strengthen their skills in addressing critical workplace issues.

An Innovative Proposal

Copain's presentation was titled "Weaving Dignity and Health through Learning: A New Safety Net Driven by the Private Sector for the World." The proposal focuses on supporting foreign workers in Japan, individuals with disabilities, and those suffering from mental health risks, aiming to alleviate social isolation and barriers to employment.

As the team presented their innovative ideas, they received enthusiastic support from over 30 fellow students, as well as Okayama University President Yasuyuki Nasu and Vice President Atsufumi Yokoi. Their presence exemplified the university's commitment to fostering a culture of engagement and support for student initiatives.

Positive Feedback from Judges

Judges praised the team’s approach, noting that their unique perspectives, influenced by their medical education, were crucial in addressing mental and physical health in the workplace. One judge remarked, "In a time where social connections are becoming increasingly tenuous, the proposal's focus on rebuilding relationships between individuals to empower workers was particularly impactful."

Students who attended the pitch expressed immense pride in their university representation. Comments such as, "It was a powerful presentation by Okayama University’s representatives," and "I felt energized after seeing their presentation—it's inspired me to engage more actively in various activities," highlighted the event's motivational impact on attendees.

A Commitment to Global Challenges

Okayama University remains committed to supporting its students in pursuing international and practical challenges like this, further enhancing opportunities for proactive learning. The university's ongoing efforts to strengthen its profile as a unique research institution are evident in its dedication to nurturing student engagement in global issues.

The competition showcased not only the innovative thinking of the students but also the university’s broader commitment to initiatives aligning with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a recognized center of excellence, Okayama University is focused on addressing pressing societal issues through research and collaborative efforts.
