Upcoming Seminar on Sustainable Forestry
CMC Research is pleased to announce an engaging online seminar titled
"Contributing to a Sustainable Society through Forestry and Wood Utilization: Scenarios for Carbon Neutrality and Local Revitalization". The event will take place via Zoom on
March 4, 2026, from
1:30 PM to 4:30 PM. This session is designed for professionals interested in enhancing sustainable timber usage, particularly within Japan.
The session will feature esteemed speaker,
Kazuhiko Fukushima, a professor at Nagoya University’s Graduate School of Bioagricultural Sciences, specializing in Forest and Environmental Resource Science. The discussion will dive into the innovative potential of wood utilization beyond traditional construction materials, emphasizing the importance of utilizing every component of timber, including cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin.
The seminar will cover the following key topics:
- - Understanding wood biomass and its complexities
- - Exploring what lignin is and its role in biomass
- - Challenges and future possibilities in wood utilization
- - Insights on the concept of wood biorefinery and its innovations
Importance of the Seminar
As the world shifts towards a carbon-neutral future by 2050, there is an urgent need to transition from fossil fuels to renewable biomass. Japan's forest resources are significant, with an annual increase of around
70 million cubic meters in managed forests. However, the current utilization of timber remains below
50%, highlighting the crucial need for increased engagement in wood usage to build a sustainable circle of resource use — cut, use, plant, and nurture.
The seminar seeks to address the pivotal role of wood biorefinery in creating new industries and innovations in biomass utilization. The emphasis will be on understanding lignin, an essential component in decomposing wood, which poses unique challenges due to its complex structure and extraction difficulties. Learning how to effectively separate and utilize lignin alongside cellulose offers unprecedented opportunities for material innovation.
Participation Details
The seminar is tailored for companies and local governments aiming to expand domestic timber usage. The registration fees are structured as follows:
- - General Admission: 44,000 JPY (tax included)
- - Newsletter Subscribers: 39,600 JPY (tax included)
- - Academic Participants: 26,400 JPY (tax included)
Additionally, if you miss the live session, don’t worry! Participants will have access to a limited-time recording along with supplementary materials to enhance their learning experience.
Why This Matters
The seminar’s broader aim is to provide participants not only with theoretical knowledge but also practical applications in sustainable forestry management. The interactive Q&A session will focus on the actual implementation of strategies discussed during the seminar, bridging the gap between theory and practice.
As we embark on this journey toward a carbon-neutral society, every contribution counts. Engaging with experts like Kazuhiko Fukushima provides invaluable insights into developing effective strategies for managing and utilizing Japan's rich forest resources. Be part of this important conversation!
