Kyoto Bus Enhances Transit Experience with Real-Time Data
In a significant advancement for public transportation in Japan, Kyoto Bus Co., Ltd. has released their bus location data in GTFS Real-Time format through the Public Transportation Open Data Council. This initiative, led by the council's president, Ken Sakumura, an emeritus professor at the University of Tokyo, aims to enhance the travel experience for locals and tourists alike.
A New Era for Kyoto’s Public Transit
The integration of this data into Google Maps™ allows travelers to access real-time information on bus locations and congestion levels, facilitating easier navigation around the city. This enhancement is particularly beneficial for international visitors who rely on Google Maps for route planning while sightseeing in Kyoto.
The new bus location system utilizes NEC Nexs Solutions' 'Bus Navigation System for SaaS', which has established a reputation for its effectiveness across various bus operators. The system provides not only GTFS-JP but also GTFS Real-Time data, marking a significant step in the digitization of public transportation in Kyoto.
Collaboration and Future Plans
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Public Transportation Open Data Council to enhance mobility in Japan through the digital transformation (DX) of public transport sectors. The council is a collaboration among 155 agencies ranging from rail and bus companies to shared bicycle services, working together to provide a standardized platform for public transport data.
