FirstEnergy Foundation Provides Nearly $20,000 in Grants to New Jersey Nonprofits

The FirstEnergy Foundation has recently awarded an impressive total of nearly $20,000 in grants, termed the "Gifts of the Season," to three nonprofit organizations located in New Jersey. This initiative is part of FirstEnergy's ongoing commitment to enhance community support where it serves, particularly in areas powered by Jersey Central Power & Light (JCPL).

This year, three notable organizations have been selected as recipients of these significant funds. Each of these nonprofits plays a crucial role in improving the quality of life for vulnerable populations across central and northern New Jersey. The organizations receiving the funds are:

1. Pearls of Wisdom Foundation (Morris County) - Awarded $6,650, this organization is dedicated to motivating the youth of Morristown. They actively engage young individuals by promoting civic interest and educational opportunities. The foundation offers scholarships to assist with college expenses and organizes seminars aimed at equipping students with necessary skills for their futures.

2. Next Steps Adult Day Program (Ocean County) - Also receiving $6,650, this nonprofit provides support to adults with special needs in Point Pleasant. The focus is on real-world experiences that foster independence and social growth, while ensuring that participants maintain a balanced mind and body through various activities.

3. Project Refit (Burlington County) - Another recipient of $6,650, Project Refit's mission centers on improving mental health support for military members, first responders, and their families. By challenging the stigma associated with seeking help, they are making strides toward proactive mental health care within these communities.

FirstEnergy's President in New Jersey, Doug Mokoid, emphasized the organization’s pride in supporting these groups, stating, "These organizations draw together the best of what New Jersey is all about to support our neighbors." Mokoid's remarks highlight the importance of community solidarity and the Foundation's commitment to nurturing diverse and inclusive communities.

The "Gifts of the Season" initiative has been in operation since 2016 and embodies FirstEnergy's core values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. To date, they have allocated about $1.1 million to a variety of nonprofits across the state, with a notable $100,000 directed specifically to initiatives within New Jersey.

For organizations to qualify for such grants, they must be first-time grant recipients with a strong commitment to diversity. These groups must meet specific criteria, including being service-disabled or veteran-owned, disability-owned, minority-owned, LGBTQ-owned, or woman-owned.

The FirstEnergy Foundation is deeply committed to supporting various types of nonprofits, including health and human services agencies, educational institutions, cultural programs, and civic groups. With the JCPL serving over 1.1 million customers across 12 counties in New Jersey, this funding is set to have a wide-reaching impact.

As FirstEnergy continues to operate as one of the nation’s largest investor-owned electric systems, its initiatives like these not only benefit the direct recipients but also strengthen the communities they serve. By committing funds towards equity and inclusion, they are ensuring a brighter future for the residents in their service areas.
