Responsible Online Gaming Association Starts National Educational Initiative for College Students

The Responsible Online Gaming Association (ROGA) has recently initiated an innovative campaign called 'Know Your Play' targeting college students. In collaboration with EPIC Global Solutions, Kindbridge Behavioral Health, and the Responsible Gambling Council (RGC), this project aims to educate students about responsible gaming habits and financial literacy.

Many college-aged individuals are navigating the complexities of financial independence for the first time, and ROGA recognizes the need for tailored resources to help them build healthy financial practices. 'Our goal is to equip students with the knowledge they need to make informed choices and to understand that gaming should be viewed as a form of entertainment rather than a financial strategy,' said Dr. Jennifer Shatley, Executive Director of ROGA. This campaign broadens the focus from previous initiatives, which primarily targeted student-athletes, to encompass the entire student body.

The 'Know Your Play' campaign offers a wealth of resources, including digital tools, videos, and educational materials accessible online at knowyourplay.org. Importantly, these resources are available to all college students, regardless of their enrollment status at a university. The content educates students on critical concepts related to responsible gaming, including randomness, impulsivity, and setting limits. Additionally, it dispels popular myths surrounding gaming, such as the illusion of control often associated with sports betting.

A key aspect of the campaign is acknowledging the interrelatedness of gaming and mental health. Students will learn about the pressures of college life, which can contribute to stress and impact overall well-being. The initiative also includes practical tips for managing mental health challenges, which are particularly pertinent in a college setting. To further enhance the reach and impact, selected universities will pilot extended resources in coordination with the campaign.

Teresa Fiore, Senior Vice President of Partnerships at EPIC Global Solutions, expressed excitement about the collaboration, emphasizing the importance of creating relatable content for college audiences. "Combining expert insights with personal narratives allows our program to aim for a comprehensive understanding of financial decision-making and risk-awareness," she noted.

The campaign will begin its rollout on college campuses over the upcoming weeks. This will include both in-person learning sessions and workshops, alongside digital tools designed for accessibility to engage diverse student populations effectively.

The importance of fostering decision-making skills among college students cannot be understated. Daniel Umfleet, CEO of Kindbridge Group, highlighted how the unique pressures faced by college students—including the challenges of financial and academic demands—can influence mental health outcomes. 'By developing these skills, we can help students cultivate resilience and healthier habits that extend beyond their college years,' he stated.

RGC CEO Sarah McCarthy emphasized the necessity of preventative education, stating, 'Students are at a heightened risk for gambling-related issues. It's crucial to provide them with the knowledge and tools needed to make safe decisions about gaming.' RGC's history of addressing prevention programs for young adults underscores the significance of this initiative.

The 'Know Your Play' campaign aims to not only educate but also empower students to approach online gaming responsibly. By providing them with essential knowledge and practical resources, ROGA and its partners aspire to cultivate a new generation of informed gamers who understand how to engage with gaming responsibly.

Launched in 2024, the Responsible Online Gaming Association comprises eight leading online gaming operators committed to promoting sustainable practices in the gaming industry. The organization emphasizes the importance of evidence-based programs that foster a culture of responsible gaming.
